Old LCD Problems

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with an old LCD monitor I have. After a move it stopped working. When I went to plug it in it smoked and made a big silicone stink. After disassembly I noticed that it had no burn marks AT ALL! No
capacitors were blown etc. My thought is that the power connector that takes power from the outside and runs it through the LCD's main PCB could be toast. That would explain why after plugging it in again there was no smoke and no sign of power to the LCD. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Unless you're an electronics technician or engineer and have a lot of time on your hands, don't bother to fix it. It will take more time and money than to buy a replacement. When it smokes, it is usually something serious.

I figured as much. I just wish someone knew what was wrong with it. I'd especially like to know if the backlight just burned out, because if thats it than I
can turn the monitor into a projector.

Smoke is always a bad sign. I suspect that trying to do anything with it will be more trouble and money than it's worth. But, if you just want to putz around, get out your screwdriver and knock yourself out!

It's to bad the suspect part is soldered to the PCB (I think). I did disassemble the monitor though and it was quite the learning experience

Well, you have gone this far, don't give up. See if you can find a replacement part. You can find electronic parts here: http://www.allelectronics.com/index.html and here: http://www.electronicsic.com/

There are lots of other places. Just Google it.

Check the power inverters for the backlights, those can be known to smoke up when they die. If it was the actual CCFL, it wouldn't smoke, unless it was shorted.

Good suggestions! I haven't checked either of those things yet. Mr. Roboto if it was the inverters how would I go about replacing them?

You can get them in those cold cathode kits people use to light up their cases. I've used one of those to replace a bad one once, so i know they work. I'm not sure if you can buy just the inverter though.

I actually used a cold cathode to replace a burtn backlight in a LCD once too, so if it is th ebacklight too, then you can get white cold cathodes to fix them.

an inverter.

i would think that if it were an inverter / backlight problem, the display would still power on with led, and if you shine a bright flashlight on the screen or even in good sunlight, you can see theres stuff on the screen. when the switch in my laptop's lid to turn the backlight off when closed went bad, i could still see the stuff on the screen when i had it in direct sunlight, the kind that makes it a bitch to read. i'd try followin where the power goes from the plug on the board, follow the traces and hope its somethin like a protection diode right by the plug.

Check to see if there are any fuses soldered to the printed circuit board. You may have to replace one before anything will work.

They look like small tubes that are soldered on both ends. They frequently have clear plastic casing. Inside you can see a fine wire. If the wire is broken, then the fuse is blown. Fuses can also be installed in a bracket without being soldered to the board.

Cool. I guess I'll take the monitor apart in a little while then!
