In 90% of the ones I've repaired, the answer is yes. I've done Gateway, HP/Compaq, Dell, Toshiba etc. If you're not afraid to take the screen assembly apart, it's not that tough to replace. Generally when an inverter goes, it will smell that burnt electric smell that we all dread. What kind of notebook is it?

not afraid whatsoever, its a compaq v2000, centrino

i actually took apart a cracked screen and the backlight itself is just a bunch of sheets of stuff?

im not too worried, iv got a spare invertor from this

i used the screen from that on another v2000
 
Yeah, it's really just a ciruit board. Should be simple to change if you've already taken one apart. You can always find parts at laptopparts.com or notebookparts.com. Two different companies. The shop I used to work for buys from both of them.
 
yep..just got the lappy today
turns out the invertor kinda melted
my new one works peachy :D
