x850xt or 7600 gs?

Looking at these 2 cards for a freind in the $100.00 - $140.00 range.

He is partial to Nvidia, but I'm not sure if the 850 256 will outperform the 512 7600gs.
x850 xt256 MB

7600 gs 512MB

Here is what a quick google search gives you: a 3 page thread on this thing!
Here is a post that gives you my opinion on it though:
Quote:
Yes, the X850XT has more pipelines, but the 7600GT makes better use of its pipelines and has much, much higher clock speeds. Plus, the 7600GT has HDR and SM3. If I were you, I wouldn't even consider getting an X8*0 card anymore. Go for the newer tech. The 7600GT is slightly more powerful than the 6800 Ultra, which was equivilent to the X850XTPE, which is faster than the X850XT.
Even if X850XT is faster in some benchmarks by 3%, 7600 has the newer tech, and it beats X850XT in all the other benchmarks.

One days ago, i have the same question too.( Now i decide to spend a little more to get a 7900gt) if you don't care about SM 3.0, only wants game fps, i rather go with x850xt. for the 7600gs, if you can unlock the 4 pipelines, the performence really is about the same as x850xt, it is depend on what game do you play. i did a lot of research on both card, either one is find. but i like the x850 xt better.

7900gt is a great choice if you have more money. I think the 7600gs would be fine though.

i would say the 7600 gs may not be slower but not noticably faster because the review said 7600 GT which has higher clocks i belive and the x850 is also cheaper, so it would be a better value but due to sm3.0 i may still say get the 7600gs.

looking at these benchmarks there is a huge dif between the gt and gs makign the x850 proboly better performance for a lower price, the only disadvantage is the lack of sm3.0 support

He is looking at the 7600 GS, not the GT. The GS has slower speeds.

So, if it is the 7600 GS vs. the x850xt, probably go with the ATI, eh?
Also, there is 256 bit mem interface on the x850 vs 128 bit on the 7600..

At those prices get the x850xt.

I have a friend who bought a 7600gs for his new computer then got a free shapphire x800gto2 le from a contest (x850 pcb and core w/ 16 pipes). With both at stock speeds the ati card won by about 1000 pts in 3dmark05 which is all that he had time/bothered to test.

that particular x800gto2 le had all the pipes out of the box that the x850xt has, the only difference in the two cards is that the x800gto2 le has the vivo chip and the x850xt does not.

Also if you are willing to volt mod, the x850 series can be pushed very far.

The 7600gt would be a better option if the price was the same as the x850xt, but it is not.

The x850xt is a steal at that price.

Even with the 7600gs at 512MB and the 850 at 256?

i hihgly doubt the memory would make a huge differnece unless u were gamign at high ress, aff and aa but on newer games the 7600 wont have the power to run all that... i would go for the x850 if u want performance for a lower price ,but if u want hdr and sm3.0 get the 7600gs,

I would say the only hands down advantages that the 7600gs would have are less heat, power, and noise issues compaired to the x850xt.

I know my ATi card(see sig) has a loud stock cooler. It is not a hot card compared to the older 6xxx nVidia's. I am only using a 450watt PSU, so power is not so bad with the ATi cards. Even without the bells and whistles of the newer tech, smooth gaming is preferred. If your a light gamer who does not ramp the settings the 7600 will do good. If you add AA and higher res, then get the ATi card.

If the nVidia was a model or two higher at the price I would be suggesting that, but the price is the winner here.

i was in the same dilema until today. i was planning on buying a 7600gt, however after i found the deal on newegg for 105$ after rebate, i couldnt pass it up. getting such a great card for 100 bucks is amazing. and saving money will get this build together even faster. i game a lot and i dont even know what the hell sm3.0 is lol. i do not think the 7600gs is worth the price, but the 7600gt is a good deal/card, but im a broke high school kid so of course i try to save as much as possible.

actually, there might be a deal in the classified for an x1800xl with 512 mb for like 190.

256 mb open box x1800xls can be found on the egg anytime. The 7600gt is great, but it it's price is in the middle of other major price points. For 50 bucks less, the x850xt matches/beats performance by a little without sm3, or for 50 bucks more the x1800xl pwns and can be modded into an x1800xt with some luck.

The dood just read that ATI cards are having problems with City of Heros, and now he's freaking, saying he may just want to stick with Nvidia, despite better performance with the ATI in that price range.. Aren't those problems outdated and with older driver sets? Or is it still a problem?
