soltek SL-K8TPro-939 next cpu for gaming upgrade?

Hello folks,

I have a SL-K8TPro-939 motherboard. I currently have an althon xp 3000 overclocked to 2.45 ghz. My video gard is an nvidia 6600gt. I am looking to do an upgrade so my games are less choppy. I am running at 1024x768 resolulutions. I play alot of oblivion, bf2, and soldiers heroes of wwii.

My latest bios support the following: Supported AMD K8 E6 CPU.Supported AMD K8 Dual-Core CPU.

Will a dual core CPU help for gaming? I read that the game MUST support dual core processors to make any difference. Is this true? What if I'm downloading stuff in the background and playing a game, will the dual core CPU help out?

What would be the best bang for the buck right now? Thanks for your advice.

The dual core will probably not really help performance wise in the game itself but your system will be smoother, you'll be able to do two CPU intensive things at once w/o any problem. All you need is enough RAM.
And best bang for the buck right now I think is the X2 3800+ s939, especially if you want the system to last you for quite a while as sooner or later games will be multithreaded.

If u wannt better performance in games, then u will need to buy a new video card. I dont think a cpu upgrade alone will help you with that.

yeah, aren't most games Video Card dependent over CPU dependent?

Yes, but if he has an A64 3000+ then he could keep the chip. But he sais something about XP3000
If he really does have an XP then the X2 will give him a pretty nice boost, even in games.
I kinda didn't think about the possibility that the OP made a mistake about his CPU.
