If it's just for gaming then any decent closed cans will do. I believe the HD280s really need an amp to sound good. The Senn HD201s for $20 are closed and would get the job done, they don't sound half bad either. For better SQ you can look into AKG K81DJs which are closed also. For music look into the Grado SR60s which are open. Head over to head-fi.org for more specialized opinions.

nonsense hd280s sound great without a amp. Im listening to mine straight out of my turtle beach card, however when im at home I have a xfi with a cmoy amplifier, and the difference is there but its not realy worth buying a amp.

the isolation is a added bonus i just took them on a flight and it was much more enjoyable.

I decided the go with the HD280's it seems they fit my needs (Don't let noise out/in). I will give them a review when I spend some time with them.

Just received the HD280's and so far they are performing quiet well (A "VERY" big improvement over my Sonys. As for the Bass issue people seem to be complaining about... I can't really tell a lack of bass (Perhaps because I am coming from some cheap Sony cans). I have only spent 15 minutes with them so far and have only listened to a few tracks using them, so I can not give a adequate review at the moment... Going to run them through some gaming tests/more music tests before I give my final opinion.

I've been using the K81DJs for gaming and for listening to music.

Comfort issues aside, they are absoutely AMAZING for both. With gaming, though, it is really recommended that some sort of 3D surround sound feature be turned on; they really benefit from it.

I think someone mentioned Grado SR-60s, i'm using these and they are great but depending on your sound card they may sound like crap.
Their only 32 ohm headphones and the output capacitors on my onboard sound and SBLive!5.1 are too low which causes a low end roll off (no bass)

With an amp they sound beautiful, also with my new X-Plosion card the output caps are large enough for low impedence phones so i don't need the amp with them.

So check the phone impedence and your sound card to see whether you'll need an amp or not.
