memory size

my computer broke so Im replacing it today. Im looking at this stuff:

ASUS P5ND2-SLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131578

intel pentium d 805
it has a 20x multiplyer and 133FSB. with water I hope to get to 4ghz.

2gb ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211011
I get the feeling that this is overkill. Im not sure though. Ill be folding, surfing editing and whatnot on this.

Im going to be buying in a couple of hours so any input would be great.

also can anybody recomend a cheep video card that I could use with SLI and overclock? F@H uses the video card right? looking for the most bang for my $

FAH doesnt use a video card (yet)

805's rock for the $$.

Get a board that you can set the multiplier with
-like the P5WD2-"E" Premium.

and a good H2o block / pump.

theres no way that Im going to pay 3x the ammount of the other board just to get control of the multiplyer. thats where I draw the line.

If this is going to be your main work/play/(un)productivity rig ...then no 2gigs is not overkill. However, if this is primarily a folder and just the occasional surfer, e-mailer, etc. 1 gig is fine.

However, I'd skip the A-DATA and go with some OCZ, Corsair, or G.Skill.

I can't find my quote from Nik...

Goes something like this: {clears voice}

"If you don't have atleast 512mb of memory, you don't have Shi.t".

Run the 2 gigs, it's a great feeling.

I think M$'s new OS, Vista, is said to require 2 gig of memory.

I personally haven't check into it, but rumor had it.....

none of the mobo's can unlock an intel cpu that is locked ... the only unlocked one are ES's and the xxtremes's.

well maybe not quite correct, I think you can lower your multi with software like crystal on cpus that support eist ... but none of the mobo's bios support a direct multi change except on the cpu's above.

And except for extreme oc'ing (which is inherently incompatible with folding) i think you would generally want to raise the multi to get more out of the proc with a limited mobo ... and none of the intels let your do that.

I currently have 1 gig of ram in my main rig, and I constantly wish I had 2. Go with 2 and you wont be dissapointed.

So if I want to build a rig JUST for folding, what is the bare minimum amount of RAM I need to install? According to Nik, it's 512MB? Can I get away with 256MB, or will it severely hamper the speed of the calculations?

For some wu's you can get away with 256mb on a folding only rig, but there are wu's that provide more points that have higher memory requirements. It is always suggested that a box have at least 512mb.

Dw speaks the truth. 256 will work, but with 512, it definately runs better.

256 to start & add some more later.
