Is my HD done for??

So the other day I came home and found my computer off, normally it's on for days at a time. Turns out the local power company was working on the pole outside of my house and they cut power to my house. Now I can't access my external USB Maxtor HD that I used to back up all of my music and pictures. It takes forever to open my computer and when I try to access the HD it claims it's not formatted and asks me if I'd like to format it now.

Is everything on it a total loss?? Are there any tools out there to recover any lost data or do I just start fresh??
