Raising the sound level

I have a movie in .avi format that has the sound pretty low. I have to blast my speakers so loud to hear it. Is there anyway I can edit the .avi to increase the sound level? I did some googling, I didn't come up with anything definitive. If any of you could help, I would appreciate it.

Get VirtualDub and extract the audio to a wav file. Increase the volume using an audio editor. Easy, go to run and type in sndrec32. Open the wav file you just extracted and increase the volume by 25% until your desired level and then save it. Back to VDub, save the video but choose WAV audio instead of source and select the wav file you just saved and then save the video.
