depends what you want.

power/heat 7900, but the ATI card will have slightly better overall graphics. However, I prefer Nvidia products....up to you.

For around that price range I would try to get this it is OOS right now and usually has a MIR bringing it down to around 200.

I own a 7900gs and the one that i have overclocks like mad even on the stock cooler, which btw I would not trust to run overclocked in the long run so I am going to change it, and I would not recommend that anyone overclocks this card with that crappy stock cooler for the long run.

I would assume that the HIS card can be unlocked, as it is one of the few x1800gto cards with the extra power regulator, and quite a few people have been able to unlock this specific card. Also it is much quieter then the 7900gs, which sounds bad even at 40% to me.

If I were looking to buy a card in that price range I would try to get the x1800gto2 and if you cant get that get then it is a toss up as to which of the other two to get as both require modification to reach their full potential. If the HIS x1800gto unlocks and overclocks well it should be slightly faster then the 7900gs but the modification required to get the x1800gto working properly is more advanced then the relatively simple mod of replacing the 7900gs heatsink.

The 7900GS is supposed to be about as fast as a GS, after overclocking it'll certainly perform better than an x1800

I'd buy the least expensive 7900GS (which I think is an eVGA) and put a good VGA cooler on it and overclock it to the max.

I think that you mean that it is almost as fast as the gt... Compaired to the gt the gs has about 20% less core units enabled which translates to about a 10% performance loss when compaired on equal timings.

I could see the 7900gs outperforming a flashed x1800gto as it may have a gimped core, due to how these 7900gs cards are overclocking, but I could not see the 7900gs outperforming the x1800gto2 overall with 512mb of ram when you hit higher resolutions and turn on AA.

yeah, I guess I meant almost as fast

According to this review, the 7900GS beats out the x1800GTO by quite a margin.

But you could be right about the higher resolutions and stuff with 512MB on an x1800.

I'd, however, still go with a 7900GS, or perhaps a 7900GT since you can sometimes find them for the same price as the 7900GS'

I guess I didnt make myself clear enough, even though I said that he would have to unlock the x1800gto more then once. Basically only some x1800gto cards can be unlocked to the full core specs. The review that you posted is compairing the 7900gs to a normal locked x1800gto. The card that he linked is one of the few cards that has a high chance to unlock with a bios flash.

Currently the cheapest retail 7900gs is like 190 after MIR shipped and the cheapest without a rebate is about 206 shipped. You can pick up a recert eVGA 7900gt for like 208 shipped as well, but most people dont want to deal with those due to that problems that 7900gt cards had in the past. The recert card would be an excelent pick but I would RMA it instantly back to eVGA to get a new one which would take a short time. If you are willing to go through this process the recert card is a good pick, but even still I would rather get the x1800gto2 provided it comes back and has the 20 dollar MIR.

edited for links:

eVGA 7900gs cheapest 7900gs without MIR at 206 Shipped

XFX 7900gs cheapest 7900gs with MIR 197 after it is all said and done

eVGA recert 7900gt 208 shipped

i have never seen a 7900gt go for a GS price even with a MIR
gs price range is $199.99-$229.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...06790717+1067923220&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=48
GT price range is $264.99-$305.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...06790717+1067920129&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=48

There is a single 512mb GT going for $350
err so i stand corrected the xfx 7900gt first in the list has a MIR making its $232 so rather close to the GS price.

what proof do you have that the 7900s run cool, my 7900gt runs up to 85C when its nonmodded. and when its modded it can get to 95C, watercooling here i come. i know at least 2 or 3 other people around the forum get these temps too.

I remember seeing an XFX GT card for like ~$220 at newegg

if your running the stock sink on that card. That sink is a joke compared to what was on the 6x00 cards. I mean look at it single piece of copper for the base. With a single folded piece soldered to the base. horrible HS, Slap on a now cheap VF-700 cooler and yes its nice and cool. NV's stocks sinks are going down hill unless your getting the GTX cards with HP's.
with my current 7900gt KO load temps with max aa and af with NFS:MW never goes above 72c on the stock cooler. Now one of the RMA replacements i had where they jacked up the core and mem voltage to make it stable, when they were having problems. It would reach 92c with stock sink. Then i slapped on the vf-900 cooler i had and temps droped to 72c load.
i do not currently have the vf-900 on my new RMA card as i now need new Ram sinks.
