Is ad aware spyware a decent program to run occasionally on new computers? Does a firewall/antivirus block everything or should u run adaware on a new comp too occasionally?

you need spyware/adware protection. The AV/firewall is only as good as the user. If you download something and execute it, the firewall isn't gonna do anything. I suggest Microsoft Defender. Grabs a lot of stuff Adaware doesn't

Spybot Search & Destroy is another good one for catching pieces of spyware that AdAware might miss. Together they are pretty good.

I personally think after years of using spybot and lavasoft adaware, that they are now very obsolete and quite useless in finding the newer spyware, like antispyware2006 and winfixer variants.

I have them installed on my pc and they missed 4 occurances of vundo, which vundofix got rid of.

I now scan regular with vundofix, smitfraudfix and use X cleaner micro edition also. Another good program is spyblaster and spyguard. I also recommend removing temp and cache files as much as poss. Use easy cleaner or ccleaner for that as they are great and dont mess your system up

But personally all you really need is good up-to-date anti virus, a good firewall, and dont use internet explorer. And also scan with the afforementioned programs

I endorse the adaware/spybot combo. Professionally I've been tasked with cleaning a lot of spyware/malware infected machines, and this combo did the trick usually, unless the infection was so bad as to require safe mode / registry editing.

adaware +spybot +MS defender = clean machines.

Get CCleaner to remove the traces of removed software as well.

Those 4 mean not much that is bad happens on any of the machines I am responsible for.

Have been using Adaware + Spybot for a long time. They both work very well both in regular mode and in safe mode.

AVG has now come out with a anti-spyware tool called Ewido (free) but it only works on windows 200 + xp. I have found that Ewido does work very well and has found stuff that Adaware + Spybot missed.

** I too have been having trouble updating Adaware and was told it's a server problem with Lavasoft.

Why not use iE? the way spyware and adware works these days it is more the user who get the system infected then the browser.

i have questionable browsing habits, always checking links my friends send me and such, using kaspersky 6 and IE7 beta since beta 1, so about 3 months now, and i have nothing on my systems (laptop and desktop).....

prior i used IE for ages, and firefox for almost a year, and then opera for a few months, and didnt matter what browser i used, my systems were always clean, i would have the odd cookie here and there, but nothing significant to ruin my system.

Kapersky 6 and Spybot S&D always worked for me, now and then i would try somethign new someone raved about and it didnt find anything spybot hadnt.
