Is RC1 stable enough for...

Using as a main OS over Pro? With my new rig on the way I am going to clean install Windows, but I was wondering if RC1 has enough support and drivers to be used as a main OS yet?

its not too bad vista itself, but there are not enough drivers for it to be your main OS. i been running it for almost a month now and last night i reinstalled xp pro cuz atleast i can get full use of my video card and sound card. When the hardware companies release better drivers(which i doubt they will until vista is realeased to the public)then i might think about using vista again.

Ok, thats what I figured. Is anyone dual booting with it? I kinda just want to try it out for fun and getting to know the OS for the future.

I've been dual booting it for a few days. It's alright. I can't get Nero to install which burns my bootie and my scanner refuses to do anything, which may be alright since I understand photochop doesn't install either, though I haven't tried that yet. I'm in the process of backing everything up so I can sling RC1 on my RAID array to dual it with XP32 and make it stop nuking my Linux installs. Vista sure doesn't play well with others.

I installed it as a dual boot....then my XP install decided to mess up to now its my main OS. It's not to bad but can be frustrating when things dont want to work right.

Depends what you want to do. I may run it on my main hard drive (a Seagate 7200.9 160GB) instead of the drive i'm running it on now (A slow ass Seagate U series 5 40GB)
I didn't want to format my 7200.9 since doing so would involve transfering 60GB of files over a wireless network and knowing I would have to do it again in a few months when RC1 deactivated. However I may use RC1 until retail Vista prices come down a bit (if they do at all, lol.)
Although, I wouldn't have to format. I could leave my music and personal files on the drive just fine, I think I should do that
I don't do any major gaming so vista would probably be fine for me.

Kewl I'll give it a whirl. I think I had 7.0.XXXXXXXXX some such. Think there's a new version every other day.

works for me fine as well......RC1 is way better than beta 2 in my opinion....other than having to use etrust antivirus cuz norton is incompatible and a few minor driver installs it seems to be running flawlessly

So from what I see it looks as though there is a possibility of having a main OS corrupted if Vista is installed on a separate partition already on the drive? I have XP on and I have a free partition I would like to test Vista out on. I am a bit leary as I can not be bothered with backing up all my files at this time.

Based on feedback I will install this OS on a separate drive and see how it is , what I like and what I dislike.....

First, RC1 is much better than Beta 2, also, avoid the 64bit Vista like the plague... it sucks.

I am using 32bit RC1 right now as my primary OS... other than Acdsee 8 not working, I havent really had any issues. No, I havent tried installing every program I have ever used... I am sure some of the programs that dont work in Vista has to be fixed at the software manufacturer, not Microsoft. I have been to the ACD Systems forum... they pretty much told any one who wanted to use Acdsee in Vista to sit on it till Vista is offically released. I sure am not buying Acdsee 9 till I know it works with Vista.

Yes you can use it for day to day things, no everything will not work with it.

I'm using the 32bit vista RC 1 and I have no complaints. I also downloaded Office 2007 beta 2 for a $1.50 off microsofts site and it runs perfectly. I play oblivion with out even a hicup.

If you are that concerned about your current software setup then maybe participating in a beta test is not a good idea for you. The idea of the RC1 is that you install and use it and provide feedback to MS about what you find.

In that way we can all enjoy a more stable and fast final release. If you cannot be bothered with that, it's better to leave the vista key for someone that will make a contribution to making it better.

Don't see this as an insult, it's just that you cannot expect a beta release to be usable without any input from yourself. If all of the 5 million rc1 testers would want to do the same as you, nothing would be tested / reported.

I'm an avid software tester ... but you really should not be running Vista RC1 as your main OS on your main system. It's not ready and it's far too unstable for it to be depended on like that...and they're NOT meant for everybody.

I agree 100%

A friend of mine has been running Vista as main OS since RC1.Though he does have XP on another partition for safty, so far Vista has worked decently well for him, about the same issues he may have with Linux. Overall IMO it's already fairly stable, it's just driver and software support is lacking. Personally with my hardware I know it could be done as I have used it for hours, though I would not choose to use it over XP knowing that XP is more stable, secure, and has better support.

I think that RC1 is stable enough for a average user. I have been running it continusly since I installed it yesterday, no restarts, no hang-ups, BSODs... stable. I got all my hardware installed no sweat... only thing I had to manually install drivers for was my onboard wireless nic... and that took the XP driver just fine.

I have XP installed on a diffrent HDD just incase, but I am going to use Vista as much as possable.

<----- average user here, I've been profiled :-P

But yeah RC1 is much better than the last beta release, been on it for a few days now and have not had any problems, it is perfectly stable w/ my setup atleast.
