problem with Seagate HDD

I recently made a new computer, and out of the series of problems this one has not been fixed. When I partitioned my Seagate 7200 250gb drive for windows xp, it showed up as only 131,000 mb. Instead of dealing with it then like a smart person, I partitioned it thinking it did not matter, like an idiot. Now I am regretting it, and I don't know what can be done to fix it. My hard drive only shows up as having a maximum of 130 gb or around there. Will I have to uninstall and reinstall windows xp, or is it something that can be fixed without doing that? The only unpartitioned space when I boot from the windows xp disc is 8 mb, so I don't think I can fix it by partitioning more space. Thanks

Your post is a little confusing but the issue is easy to resolve.

Install windows XP service pack 1, Xp only recognises drives up to 131 GB, dont ask why none of us know.

When you install SP1 the problem will go away.

Now from your post i think i saw you installed XP on the 131GB partition? Thats gonna be an issue if you have. The problem is each time you install XP its always gonna see it as 131gb,

you need a XP install CD with Service pack 1 slipstreamed onto it. GOOGLE it, there are plenty of websites showing you how to make a XP sp1 slipstreamed install CD.

Alternatively

"when you format it you will have the option to select which OS you are using, most people just click XP, this will limit the drive. After clicking xp go to the right and click w/SP1. after you do this it will ask if you are sure your os supports drives larger than 137gb, select yes, and format the rest of the way you normally would. this has worked for me everytime and my 250gig WD shows up as 232gb in xp pro build 2500 with no service packs installed."

Oooh, Oooh, I know. The original WinXP driver only supported 28bit addressing or up to 137 GB. The new drivers support 48bit addressing (extended addressing) or way more than 137 GB. I can't remember the massive number it is.
