All you need is a basic 40-60 mm fan.

Are you trying to mount this fan directly onto the heatsink on the card or strategically position it such that it blows toward the general area around card's heatsink? I wouldn't get anything less than a 60mm fan as it will be a waste of your time (a 60mm should fit just fine).
The problem with putting it right on the card's heatsink is that there isn't really any good way to attach it. How did you plan to secure the fan to the heatsink?
