DS3 gigabyte/Jmicron raid controller.

All you guys with the DS3 if you have raid 0 set up on these lemme see some HDtach SS's.
Purely out of curiosity, I am building a "budget" rig consisting of DS3, 6300 and some great inexpensive ram I scored off the classies. Going to use 2 of the seagate perps and I was wondering if and how much slower it would be than on the intel matrix raid.

I have an issue with this chip. A couple of weeks ago, I threw in another Hitachi 7K250 and created a mirror from existing drive within the gigabyte win utility. It rebuilt fine, but the problem was that it KEPT rebuilding after every reboot. I didn't try the ROM utility tho. Any ideas? P5B Deluxe?

I am plannin to run raid 1 , possibly raid 0 on this same board, any and all tips on creating the raid array are welcomed since I have not played with raid in a while, quite a while but I am leaning towards raid 1 for backupof crucial stuff. If I go raid 0 what is recommened stripe size,16?

this is my first raid, u want to create a driver disk with the included cd in windows b4 u set it up, then set the raid via bios, then boot. when running the windows install, load the drivers form that disk so it can be installed.

I really think my speed should be way faster tho!!!!! I dont know why, or if anyone has sata 2 working on thier boards

I'm just miffed cause I assumed the board would have Intel's Matrix RAID. That works.

Intel is very bad and defining exactly which controller you need to get raid/matrix or even native Sata. You can use this rule of thumb though, if the MFG says it has an ICH8 it wont do raid or even native sata. If it says it has an ICH8R, it will do all of those things. That rule has stood ever since ICH5 and earlier as far as I know.

For those who will disagree, all of the above has been tested/proven thoroughly. I'm not just cutting and pasting specs.

Maybe I missed something, but you guys never figured out that the R in ICH8R for example might actually mean RAID?

It's not that I disagree... it's just that you're WRONG. The DS3 does both Raid (as the guy who benched it above just proved) AND native Sata. The "R" is simply an indication that the board is capable of Intel's "Matrix" Raid. It still does all the regular raid and SATA fine.

The DS3 does Raid with the Gigabyte/Jmicron Sata controller. It does not do raid with any of the ports that are controlled by the ICH8. None of the ICH8 ports do actual native Sata either.

Sorry but check your facts.

I decided there is a much better way to approach this since people constantly refuse to believe the facts about ICH8 on a DS3 or any other board for that matter.

Here is my challenge, plug in a Sata Drive to one of the 4 yellow ports on a DS3 board. Set it up as native Sata and bring up device manager and show us that it is a native sata drive. Take screen shots and post them please. If you can do that, I'm going to throw every computer in my house into the street and never use them again LOL.

Don't hold you breath for computers to start flying into the street. That wont ever happen.

Any idea if I can add a drive to the Jmicron controller and create a mirror in the ROM Bios? As I said upstairs, the windows utility worked, but then kept rebuilding the array over and over. The other minor issue I had was that the windows gigabyte raid utility didn't list how much space was on the drive. So this left me w/ 2 "identical" drives. I had to check the channels to know which had the goods...

well folks I got to use the DS3 and the Dq6 with the intel matrix raid, the p5b deluxe with the ICH8R and now the ICH7R on this p5w dh deluxe they are all the same, aside from the ds3 which slower by about 30 mb/s slower on the average read compared to the rest of the boards with the matrix raid, I got 125 with the ds3 and 155+ with the others, interestingly enuff the fastest numbers I got with these perps is with the ICH7R

Since the DS3 doesnt' have an ICH8R, that must have been quite a trick. Show me.
