Exclamation a BAD O/C?

Hey. I have a AMD x2 4800+ stock w/ 2.4ghz. I overclocked it to 2.77ghz. All parts are in my sig.. I was expecting a better O/C but that is all I can get to to run at without getting voltage around 1.65v..

My settings are:

231x12.0 cpu @ 1.59v
231x4.0 ldt @ 1.2v (won't run stable @ 5.0 multiplier)
FSB 200 1:1 3-3-3-6 @ 2.7v 2T (my Patriot ram won't run @ 1T)

Memtest reported:
L1 cache O/C from 19.7gb/s to 22.7gb/s
L2 cache O/C from 4.9gb/s to 5.6gb/s
Mem speed O/C from 1.2gb/s to 1.6gb/s

I ran 3d mark05 & 06 before and after the O/C and there is NO gain. One test I actually was less then stock score.

Anyone have any suggestion on what to do..?

Suggest you try 3-4-4-8 on your RAM and test again. But you're probably getting very close to the top end of your chip. Keep in mind a good chunk of the video score will come from the vid card, not the CPU. SuperPi and SiSandra are good CPU tests.

Since you've got such nice RAM you may as well use it - also try 252x11 with the above RAM timings at 1:1. Your video BMs may not get much better but your RAM bandwidth will show a big jump ...

i'm an idiot. after the initial bench when i got 4850 in 06' [stock settings] for some reason in ati control center i set the graphics performance vs. quality all the way to quality. the whole issue was software. i now benched at 5550. I also moved my ram from slots 1,2 to 2,4 and that didnt help the bench much but Memtest reported Memory throughput faster by roughly 700mb/s to 2500mb/s.

Anything else I can do to make things go a little smoother and help my O/C?

maybe try the 11 or 10 multi with ram on a divider and the ldt @ 3x
11x250
or 10x270?

have you tred any othe the other multis?
with my 4400+ i find with the lower multis i need less voltage and so it makes less heat

The faster the CPU's start out, the worse they overclock. The 3800, 4200, 4400, and 4800 all have about the same top end overclock for average CPU's.

i changed it to 250x11 so i can get the most out of my ddr500 ram.

im at 2749mhz. ran memtest over night stable and i'm prime95 stable. 36 degrees idle and around 45 at load. currently @ 1.6v. i'm going to see if i can get it to run at any lower voltage. we'll see. now it's time to attempt and oc the vid card.

at first on my opty it was the same. i could hardly get it to 2.8Ghz without applying horrendous voltages. but after a few days of burning in at 250x10 @ 1.225V (that allowed me to be stable at 280x10 @ 1.6V instead of being unstable, but able to boot at 1.65V) and some burning in at 280x10 @ 1.55V and later @ 1.525V, i'm now absolutely stable at 311x9 (2.8GHz) at @ 1.525V and on my way on to 3.0Ghz.

so my advice is to try to get the cpu as far as it will go without worrying about ram (until i dropped my multi to 9 i had it at 1/2 to the fsb) and burning it a bit. then adjust as necessary until everything runs at max.

Before I overclocked I tested out how far I could push each compenent sperately.

htt ldt maxed @ 1225 but later in my oc it seemed to cause instability during intense cpu usage

i maxed out my bus at 330 until my system wouldnt boot

and my ram maxed @ 265fsb @ ddr400 1:1 @2.7v. 3-3-3-6
i could possibly try to really push my ram later on. maybe i'll try the burn in period. let this current oc run for a week or so and then try to push in another level.

i really don't know how high i should go with voltages/temps..

A few people have run 1.6v on the CPU - my personal limit is 1.55v.

Temps shouldn't exceed 55°C with 60°C being the red-line - if you're running 60°C you're probably burning something ...

you need to get your dual channel working, according to CPU-Z you are only running single channel, stick the ram in 1 and 3(match the colors on the slots)
