Ok, before I go any further, this thread WILL NOT ask for good places to DL illegal copyrighted stuff. Im sure I can figure that out on my own. I just want to know HOW to use bittorrent, from point a to point b. I dont get it. Im fairly comfortable to building a PC, that is, i can order the parts and put them together and install an OS and wala', a porn err internet surfing machine.

What I do not understand is how do you get bittorrents to actually work and download stuff. Examples would be great! Thanks all.

Oh btw the guy i work with (whom is very unapproachable, and a software designer sent me the bittorrent he uses. http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Im SURE i can find where to DL stuff, that is not a problem. Thanks for addressing what i feel is a mountain ive made from and anthill. If I have violated anything on this site, sorry, that was not my intention. Thanks again.

the best way to think of it is this

the torrent file is a small map that gives the torrent program directions on where to retrive the files from.

you download the torrent file, use a program to open it (ie bit lord) and then bit lord will download the file for you.

im an azureus man myself, although i only use it for legal purposes such as sharing files between friends. (patches / maps for mohaa)

you could go to google.com and search for pirate torrents. be carefull though watch out for illegal actions ok.

Torrents are great for trading your linux iso's, open-source stuff and whatnot. Unlike normal peer-to-peer sharing you download (leech) and upload (seed) parts of whatever file(s) you're getting at the same time to multiple people, and thus if someone in the peer list logs off it doesn't really matter as long as there are still some people seeding the torrent. Usually you download files in either normal directory/folder format, wrapped in either a .zip or .rar (winrar) package, or contained in a mountable format like .iso or .mdf (you'll need either daemon tools, alcohol 52/120%, or Nero for these).

If you're going to do illegal things though ( :( ) be mighty careful on public trackers (basically don't do it, but if you do then at least stay away from brand-new releases on those sites).

utorrent is a much smaller and smoother-running client than Azureus (Bitcomet's not bad either though).

The best bittorrent client I've used by far is uTorrent.
The secret to getting a torrent to download quickly is to only download ones that have a high number of seeders and preferrable if possible a low number of leechers. Also, it is common courtesy for you to seed the file for a good while after you've downloaded it so that you can give others a chance as well. This keeps the community going.

As far as using a torrent client, you use a torrent search engine to find the file you want to download and then you download it (all it is, is a small little 5-10k file with a .tor extension). You can save this or just choose to open it with your torrent client. Your torrent client will use the info from the file to go out and find all the seeders and start downloading the file. The more seeders and less leachers, the faster you get your file.

You can also fairly easily create and submit your own torrent files with your bit torrent client. How you publish it varies by site, but usually you enter a description of the file and upload your .tor file to the host site and then begin uploading it.

Hope this helps. Any questions, just ask.

I think you mean that it wont download anything because of a firewall/router , and that will tell you how to fix the problem.

Also because of the way bit torrent works, and due to a technicality it is legal to download some copyrighted material that don’t specify "and all parts thereof" or something of the like in the copyright, because you are downloading small scattered parts of something, not the whole thing. Of cource you still have to convince the judge of that ;)

Read it on some website that I can’t find atm, so I’m not positive it was a reliable source.

Dump Azuerus, java is great for writing software that works on any platform but most people do not know how to program it properly and it ends up being a pig.

uTorrent is great for single files... I personally use BitComet because it has the familiar feel of a standard p2p program with the transfer windows etc...

Plus you wont need to port forward with it since it has configs for running on NAT routers

However, I usually just assign a static NAT on my router.

AHh my savior!!! After i move out this weekend, my second goal will be to format my comp, it needs its yearly enema, and then after i get XP up and COMPLETLY updated(6 hours later.....) i will redo my overclocks, mayby push it a little further, and then try Bitcomet! THanks for the info!
