Formating my HardDrive? because...

I was wondering if I could have my computer guy format my HD because there is alot of stuff on there that wont let me delete the files... The HD is a 40 GB Ultra DMA 5400 rpm, it is from Hp, it is the original HD that came with the computer from Hp. I was wanting to know if I should even bother calling him and asking him to Format my HD, only for the reason that it wont let me delete stuff off of the computer, and I only got ~5gb left of HD space. so please share your comment.

Thanks

Um If you have everything you need to get going again there is no reason not to.. you'll probably notice a fairly large performance increase as a result of the lack of clutter as well.

Well a reformat seems a little drastic. You know you gonna have to move the files you want to keep to another storage medium, then reinstall all your programs, do Windows updates, etc. Then move all your files back to the reformatted hard drive.......not a good solution.

What kind of files are you trying to delete and what message are you getting when it won't let you delete them?

I have heard of people charging ~£40 (~$70) to move files off a PC, reformat it, and move files back.

What do you mean you can't delete files from the PC? Does it give you an error message? Tried using the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet to remove unwanted and unused software?

It's also possible the same thing happened as what my sister did.

Disk Cleanup + compress drive to save disk space.

Are the things you can't delete in blue letters?

there is a program called "unlocker" i believe, and it will let you delete almost anything. Sucks when you get those messages that "Such and such is in use and cannot be deleted at this time". UNLOCKER will just kill the app and delete it. Try googling it

The guy that I was wanting to format it is a good friend of the family and he might not charge me, and I got all of the disk's of the things I need, I mainly play games and I got disks for all of them. the other stuff like bearshare I can re install. and when I try to delete some files like games it say I need the correct disk to uninstall it and it only came with 2 disks and I tried them both, nothing works

I would run CCleaner and regsupreme. It sounds like you have some bad installs/uninstalls.
