http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/interne...tes/index.html

They said that there are about 100 million websites on the net as of october 2006.....

did someone forget to do the math?

I figure theres ALOT more websites than that. Maybe they just counted ones that were businesses and stuff?

I bet they forgot all the private websites that regular people have just for themselves.

100 million seems way too low of a number.

They should of asked google for there results. google searches like what? 4 billion websites?

Don't forget there is a difference between a website and a webpage. Maybe they didn't count all 5 billion myspace pages as individual pages but counted all of them as 1 website because they are at myspace.

It is just much easier now then in the past to get a domain. Back 10 years ago or less there was only 1 company you could but them from and they were not cheap. Now one can get them free with hosting deals or just throw $10 at godaddy.com

The one I got 10 years ago was cheap to get, (for the time) but definately not easy, I had to provide Proof of identification, and various forms filled out and faxed to ICANN and somewhere else that I dont remember. That one took me nearly a week to get fully up and operating.

More than likely just registered domain names. Hell, I've got three that I've done nothing with and my company has 250.

Within that, there are some that are busy and updated more often, and that represents the active sites, which are at about 47 or 48 million

Netcraft uses the domain name system to identify Web sites, check how many of them are in a particular location, such as what operating system and Web server software they're running, and then publishes its information in a monthly report.
So in other words there are 100 million registered domains. And of that, about 48 million are active.
