I dont see what the big deal is. I dont care about commas or apostrophes because it does not seem that necessary when posting on a forum or a chat room.
Acronyms or using numbers does not bother me that much unless it is obsessive.

The thing that bothers me the most by far, is run on sentances, not using periods, or grammar police, who have to correct every thing wrong, and dont even add anything to the conversation other than to bitch.

To, too, Their, They're, the only one that bothers me is their, they'rs.

Bad writing/grammar (even commas and apostrophes) make it take more work for me to process and interpret what the person is trying to say. I mostly post here to help people. If they make it hard for me to do so, I won't. It's not like I get paid to do it.

Run-on sentences are sentences without commas... so how can you not care about commas?

Anything worth saying is worth saying well. If it's not worth your time to write a coherent post, then it's not worth my time trying to decifer what in the world it was that you were trying to convey but failed to do so out of laziness.

I suppose it wasn't worth your time to prevent us from having to decipher what you meant by "decifer."

Internet slang does seem to be getting a lot worse recently. I have always done what I can to at least separate compete thoughts with commas and periods. I actually have a hard time typing with extremely poor grammar, spelling is worse when I'm typing fast, but I'm slower if I try to type with abbreviations. The single most annoying thing to me, no idea why, is "ya" instead of "yeah" or "yes".

I tend to type a lot more formally on forums than in instant messaging programs, mainly because of the person or people that are reading it.

Our school paper had a section called "5 things that will help you look smart today", one of them was that High School students in New Zealand are now able to use internet slang like "u" instead of "you", in essays and school exams if its easier for them to write that way.

That just makes me want to destroy the New Zealand government... But that would be politics so I won't get into that here

But seriously, it's one thing if you make yourself sound like an idiot on the internet where it doesn't matter so much, but if you make yourself sound like an idiot when it does matter, like in school papers or in a job application for example, then that just ****es me off

But even on the internet, at least on forums you should use proper grammar and everything, since you're given plenty of time to type out your ideas. Even in instant messages I'll always use proper grammar and spelling except for maybe a few abbreviations and not capitalizing stuff or using periods, but my grammar is nearly perfect in my posts on these forums.

Oh, and just to note, people who use letters like u, r, b, and y to represent words like you, are, be, and why really annoy me (although I have done it a few times, it's usually when I'm making fun of people who do that )

It depends on the forum and the amount of sleep I've had before posting. When i type here I try to be clear and concise. When i use my txt messaging I will use txt lingo if I'm running out of space, damn 160 char limit

On here and a few other boards I will read and re-read my posts to make sure my point is getting across. Even in school, as far back as grammar school I've struggled with spelling. Spellcheck is my friend.

I have to be careful how I type because one e-mail can be to a CFO and another can be to someone I'm replying to in a forum. I try to keep my typing to the CFO standard because I'm usually not working for the people I'm replying to on a forum and they can't fire me

what used to be a sign of distinction and accomplishment (l337 speak) has now been corrupted and assimilated by the masses of script kiddies on the net. I don't mind reading internet shorthand and can use it if i have to. It just depends on where i am, Who I'm posting as and what I'm looking for. If you're in mexico, looking for something and you need help, you speak spanish.

On a related topic. Since computers and word processing has now become the norm have any of you noticed how bad current penmanship is? I've always tried to have neat writing ever since 4th grade when Barbara (name withheld to protect the innocent) commented on how nice my writing was. I've gotten written notes, reports etc from people and it really looks like 3rd graders wrote it. Do they even emphasize penmanship in school like they used too?

For the record I re-read this 3 times and I'm sure there are still mistakes

I should clarify about commas. I basically ment people who type a whole paragraph gets on my nerves. And I have found most people that dont use commas but do you punctuation will use periods more often.

Actually, I've always been a bit annoyed by that aspect of your posts. It's true, some people don't bother separating their stuff into structured paragraphs, but too much separation is not a good thing either. You end up with disconnected thoughts.

Maybe just something to keep in mind

stuff like that dosen't really bother me. I'm guilty of doing that sometimes as well, pretty much everything in my head is disconnected. Its putting it together so that other people can get what I'm saying is the challenge.

Actually no that does not fal lunder the lines ofterrorism

the act of terrorism is to kill the innocents that live there in order to make the government change its ways, and although the term gets bandied about quite a bit it ONLY ever is accurately used when a group kills civillians to make its point.
EDIT: For a popualr example..
When people in Iraq kill our soldiers over there to make a political point, that is NOT terrorism. Terrorism specifically means killing CIVILLIANS to make a political point. Like the Irish do in N Ireland (or 99% of muslim attacks) but those that are targetting US soldiers are NOT terrorist attacks, I would just want to make that clear...

EDIT EDIT:

Back on topic... Yes there is a huge problem with illteracy on the internet, the problem I see even at OCF is one of acceptance. I do not know how many posts I have read that I just thought" HUH?" There is no concise or logical thought behind it. I am not innocent in this topic either, please do not misconstrue my intentions. I am guilty more then the average poster of poor spelling and typos, if you look through my posts though you will find that there is a lot of "edited by" because I do care about presenting myself properly even though initally I am a high school drop out and it shows. What is worse than typo or grammatical errors however is the bias posts.

There are SO many posts here that are nothing more then hate filled monolouges that it is amazing the moderators let this go on.

I saw earlier that someone hates when LOL is used in a post. Personally I like it. I was told that my attitude comes across as condescending, and presumptious. A little acknowledgemnet of levity helps to break that up. If I was purposely trying to be rude, I would state that, and would expect to be chastised for it. I saw about 3 months ago someone posting about a 32x board and this person came across posting 2 year old information saying that there was no such thing (thiking of nVidias 32 X not crossfire or nVidias 580 series) . Here I was guilty because I just thought.. .whatever, this person obviously knows nothing but is trying to come across as some source of information. Rather then repudiate the person I just let it go. So you see, I was wrong. I did not correct the person. Its my fault. And I think that is the big problem here (at ocf). There is a report bad post button, and I try and use it, really, but I hink it should be used more. Not just in the sense of someone flaming someone but also outright falsitys. (dude, is that a word?).

But just for the OP

Dude U r o Not rite, you think you have a duel core or a quatro and u r kool? To hall wid ju.

LOL jk
Oh yah thats another big beef, you OBVIOUSLY dont have a kentsfield if in your your sig you say you have a quatro. So shut up

(quadro means four Quatro means Fourth idiot) and yes that is meant to be rude
