xbox 360 game save storage

I'm being hassled into buying an xbox 360 w/HD, but all I want to do is be able to save my progress in a game - I couldn't care less about having a component video cable, dvd remote or wireless control (in fact I prefer a wired one) and save 50 clams. Can you use a vanilla usb stick to save your progress in a game, or do you have to use a memory card designed for the console?

This should've been in the console gaming forum, but since it is new.....

I haven't tried saving with a usb mem stick although that may work, the 360 mem cards are fairly cheap.

Also, I wouldn't buy the cheaper version because the hard drive isn't just used for saving stuff, it's used for cached files kind of like memory swap space and one game that I know of for sure, Oblivion, runs like crap without it.

Lastly, if you don't go HDTV with it then it's really not worth buying. All the graphics you see on the back of boxes are HD and in store demos as well, it REALLY looks like a regular xbox game without a HDTV. If you want to see for yourself, go into a game store with a demo set up and ask the employee to flip the switch on the video connector from HDTV to Standard and prepare to be amazed at how different it looks.

LOL, Oblibion runs like crap with the HD.

Ya, I would tell most; No HDTV dont bother with the 360 too much. But thats just my oppinion, go see for yourself.

I will try to test the mem stick tonight after work if you dont get an anser before then.

i understand the diff between non and hdtv, but honestly 360 still looks beutiful on a reg tv. i run mine on a reg 32" and a non hd 130" projector. i still love it. you can not convince me that gears of war on a reg res tv looks like a reg xbox game... also, id say get the premium deal. the hd is absolutly neccicary. you cant even play old xbox games on it if u dont have an hd.

I second that - my projector supports 1080i, but I just use the thing so rarely. With svideo, the pictures' scanlines are really widely spaced (how can I explain - remember with games about 10 years ago, where game videos would be "interlaced" or only every 2nd line would be drawn?). Component to my dvd recorder then av out to the tv and it looks fine.

You'll all probably not really believe this, but I only brought it for test drive unlimited. I've got no real interest in consoles (like having more control - modding etc with a pc), and if I sell the 360 when TDU comes out on PC, I'll get at least 30% of my investment back - what I actually have to pay to play it in between times works out to be a pittance, pretty much.
