When you create your WoW account it will ask you for either a game card or credit card to continue, even though the game gives you 1 month free. So just be ready for that.

Okay first of all...a few things.

I can guarantee your son gets hooked. Establish rules now while you still can.

Second: I would strongly reccomend your son chooses something that he really wants to play, it sucks leveling to 60 and realizing you should have rolled a different class.

Yes you need a copy of World of Warcraft (I think Wal-Mart had it for 19.99) and then you would and SHOULD pre-order World of Warcraft:The Burning Crusades if you want it on release day or even that week, you can pre-order at gamestop/ebgames not sure where else. But I highly recommend you pre-order because it does come out January 16th and if it's anything like World of Warcraft was it will be hard to get the first week, due to sell outs.

Like 7 said, you should limit the time I don't care even if he is 18... the game is a HUGE DEMAND of time. He will skip class or "forget" his homework, get "sick" when it's time to work etc etc. Your son might be more responsible than most of the people I played with (I quit and sold my account) and not prone to this but it's just a friendly warning. Please do not be offended.

We have a number of people at work who skip days because of this game. I hope you know what you're getting into.

Yeah, some advice, Limit him to around an hour a day. Hopefully, he won't get as hooked.

I got obsessed with it, and managed to go cold turkey......

I'm a reformed player myself. Hooked me in like crazy until I eventually realized I was playing right into Blizzard's game design. You know they've got an entire team devoted to figuring out how to make the game as addictive as possible.

That being said, it's one of the best damn MMO's out there and if you can get your son to excercise discipline on how much he actually plays, more power to him (and you.) Just keep it at like a couple hours a day, or something like that. If he doesn't like the idea of a time limit and he plays himself to obesity anyway, just mention to him that he's allowing himself to be a pawn of a multi-billion dollar corporation and the best way to screw them back is to "play responsibly"; or some junk like that.

But to actually answer your question, "Yes" you need the original WoW game to play the Burning Crusade expansion. I know the former comes with a free month, game cards cost $30 sixty days; and it's possible that the Expansion may have some time with it... but that's speculation.

And yes, the time is cumulative.

Having lost 3 friends now to this game, I'd say just don't, or at least take the time to realize what you may be helping your son get into. I understand that my friends are the ones to blame for this, but I can't help but hold Blizzard partially at fault due to their development strategy.

ARRRRHHHHHHGGGGGggGGg! How do people get into a game that much! I play WoW and I only play it like 6-9hrs a week. I guess you have to be like incredibly bored and have nothing to strive for I guess.

Well, not really.

Once you get into endgame raiding, the game becomes at least 5x as time consuming.

Getting NEW GEAR is addictive. Trust me, I would sit for weeks on end just hoping for 1 new purple item out of the few instances we ran a week.

Until you're in a guild where you get defaulted everything you want, you have the best gear in the game, and that gear drops every time, you probably won't be fully satisfied.

The end game was actually what put me off... I loved the game and played it A LOT up until it came to 40 man raid type things. It just didn't seem fun anymore, and it would take sooo much time to get anything, and you just think to yourself, what's the point?

I know some people love the end game, but I was "addicted" up until that point... when I got there, I kind of lost interest. I did the smaller instances and PVP'd a ton though @ 60.

I was playing WoW for about 6 months, and I wasn't the least bit addicted even though I was doing endgame raids. Its all about discipline and self control. With a younger child, some enforcement is almost sure to be necessary. They dropped the price on WoW to $19.99. You can even dl the software online and then just activate your account. I'd recommend getting the cds because its faster. Then you have to get BC on top of that. I'd preorder it.

WoW comew with parental control settings.
Very useful to limit play time.

If it is a younger child or even a teen, set some rules. and use those parental controls, you can limit what times he can log on that way.

This whole WoW thing is redicilous. Its like the new gateway drug. First, your killing boars, then you dress up as a troll and run around at night terrorizing your town. I refuse to pay 15$ a month (180$ a year) PLUS the 30$ for the game itself. I know of like 5 of my friends who do not leave there house ever, all they do is play this game. Wake up, go to school, come home at 2:00, play untill 1:30 in the morning, go to sleep, wake up at 6:30, repeat. Its redicilous. Thats 11.5 hours a day

Im not saying the game isnt fun, its just redicilous how popular this is becoming. BTW, people are now adding "Reached Level 60 in World of Warcraft and *insert crazy super powerful items and what not here*" to college and job resumes

Def. limit his playtime.

Please please please let him only play on the weekends if at all possible. I know many many kids who have destroyed their education with that damn game because it eats up so much time.
