Help with 2800+ CPU upgrade

I just got a 2800+ Barton and tried to install it in my GA-7VT600-L MB, which AMD and Gigabyte sez is OK. I don't get a POST or anything. I tried setting FSB to 100mhz but that didn't work either. I reinstalled the 2400+ that I have now, and all is well. Am I forgetting something. I know this old technology but not that old.

I have 1 GB RAM too.

thanks

You don't specify if the 2800 is new or not, the BIOS verson of the MB or the speed of your memory. So I will throw out these possibilities.

1. the CPU is bad. (Have you checked it out on someone elses' PC or on another motherboard? You might still want to check it even if you bought it new or got it out of a working computer)
2. If the CPU is good, then check for the BIOS version and see if there is a newer BIOS you can flash to. (Flashing BIOS is much easier now than it was in the "olden days" of motherboards. Just go to the MB's website to see how to do it. And even if the MB maker says the BIOS version is good, upgrade it anyway. Newer BIOS versions can handle more memory, CPU combos.)
3. Check the DIP switches or jumpers on your motherboard. Make sure they are set at 166Mhz for memory and make sure your multliper is correct. If you have a "jumperless" motherboard you can check these settings from your BIOS.
4. If the CPU is good and the BIOS is good (or already the newest) and 'set' correctly then I would upgrade memory. The 2400 uses 133Mhz DDR (266MHz) and the Barton uses 166Mhz DDR (333MHz).
5. If all of this fails. Dump your PC and get a new Athlon 64X2 and new motherboard.

Hope this helps.

After digging up the info on your motherboard I see there are two revisions of it the GA-7VT600-L rev 1.0 and GA-7VT600-L rev 2.0 the processor specs for rev 1.0 is here the processor specs for rev 2.0 is here after looking at both of these I see that with the factory flashing of the BIOS you should have no problem running the 2800+ in your system. As long as the bios isn't croupted or as long the board has no flaws then then there should be no need to flash the BIOS.

After reading though the manuals for rev 1.0 boards I see that you need to set the sw1 to off for any processor over the 100mhz bus range and on the rev 2.0 board you have to set the jumper JP1 to open.

Here is the Gigabyte resource page for rev 1 and rev 2

I would also try another CPU in that board as well as you new CPU in an old board if it can handle it. While looking though the manual I found that the max system memory is 3GB however being that its a 3 channel DIMM bank and the manual states that the max allowable per bank is 512MB so you may want to make sure that your DDR is compatible with your board. However this doesn't sound like it may be your issue normally a MB will triple beep on a RAM error so if your saying that you got nothing but a few lights a fan or two to spin up and then it dropped out on you then that sounds like a MB or a bad CPU. Another thing you could check would be to see if the CMOS battery is still good sometimes while sitting on a shelf they just die out.

Hope that something I have written helps you out. If there is anything else we can do to help please ask.

Thanks for the advice

I want to thank you guys for helping. Here is what I should have mentioned.

I do have the rev 2 version of the board and did set the jumper to 100mhz. I also cleared the CMOS and switched out memory. I also tried one stick in of 512 MB. I did notice that the ram light did not lite anymore but if it never boots to post, will the ram lite work? I don't think so but the memory is good. The 2800 was suppose to be new but it had a dull finish but no scratches and the no evidence of HS paste. I took the 2800 out an put in my 2400 so I could write you guys. Got a couple of ideas from the board and tried the 2800 again with nothing installed but the cpu/fan and video card (I also tried with one stick of memory). Still no good. Then when I put the 2400 BACK in the second time, IT would not boot to POST either. I figured I either blew the board or TWO cpus. I took my old board with a 1800 in it so I could write this note. Darn the luck but I don't have anything to test the board and/or the two cpus now.

You likely weren't gentle enough when installing the heatsink.
Nothing but a black screen, LEDs and fans likely is because the processor got damaged.

Can you see any specks on the die? If you do, it sounds like you crunched the core.
