buying new ram need some input

I am about to get a 1gig stick from a friend for my b-day. Just need to pick one out really. been looking and narrowed it down to about 3. eventually I will buy the same stick to run dual channel.

I will be using it with my 2 512 sticks and selling my 2 256 sticks. my ram is already running super slow (2.5-2-2-5 @ 100mhz) and I figure it is because of my timings not matching.

256- 3-3-3-8 ddr400 (????)
512- 2.5-4-4-8 ddr400 (kingston)

I am wanting to match up my new stick with these 512's or find one that is close enough I can change the timings and it will work fine. I might overclock in the future, highest 250mhz, but I think i will aim for like 220mhz or so.

I looked into ddr500 but it seems like it is really hard to find or more expensive than I like. figured ddr400 was good enough for what I do and maybe my new sticks with be overclockable.

any help much appreciated, thanks.
