swapped my new Xeon Quad core over to live disk Ubunto!!
seeing as it is my new exchange server, i dont think i will be able to leave it running, but for this week at least

But its strange it isn't faster... My overclocked E6600 does those WU's in 4m 45s per frame with only 2 cores. What are the system specs?

I think that sounds pretty correct. The client only really uses 3 cores efficiently, on a dualcore it ends up being alot more efficient then on a quadcore.

As an example, running 2 smp-client instances on a 8-core opteron creates loads of about 5.75-6, while running 8 separate single linux instances creats a load of 8 (each processor runs at 100%).

Servers also generally have slower ram, and they are rarely overclocked...

Dell PowerEdge 2900
Dual processor Xeon 5130 (2ghz/4mb) 1333fsb
4gb 667 memory

not overclocked or messed with in anyway, needs to support 30 odd people...not a number cruncher......a workgroup server, i would think that a overclocked 6600 would easily keep up with it

Is their a linky to the live disk around here? I'm hoping to finish up Quadzilla™ and let her run rampant this weekend. Never done the Linux thing, but I would like to see how she runs on 4 GPUs vs. 1 SMP. :burn:

i used this:

64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD from:

http://ftp.ticklers.org/releases.ubuntu.org/releases/edgy/

For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.

then installed the 32bit libs (search on here), and then followed the instructions in the betaforum

and off you go

They come and they go...

Well, one quad box UP on Live SMP (your x4 Xeon), one quad box OFF of Live SMP(my x4 Opty). It's back to Windows duty for a while; munching four 14xx wu's. I'm reviewing the logfile right now to see what the overall yield was, for it's 12 day run "live".

Because I can't OC this machine in Linux(yet) the -600mhz(times 4) performance hit running @stock has been an obstacle. My next setup will be to run Linux in VMware on XP, with the machine OC'd to 2.4ghz(vs 1.8 stock) and see how that compares to the "live" SMP and "regular WU" XP production.

never mind all that..........I HAVE OVERTAKEN THE GREAT WEDO!!!

Damn you're catching up fast. I was hoping I would not have to do this, but I guess I do... (goes and installs smp-client on a 4-core woodcrest server previously running 4 console clients)
