Help with dual monitors

Hi, I recently got my hands on a 19" Diamondtron (hand downs ) but I'm having a problem with the resolutions.
Right now I'm using the 19" and a 17" side by side, the 19" is using 1280x1024 because thats the "native" res (everything looks better then anything lower or higher) and the 17" is using 1024x768 because it can't go higher.
I'm using the "extended" desktop mode and the thing is that when I start a game the 17" desktop sort of gets pushed aside.
Is there anything I can do to preserve the desktop on the 17"?
Thanks

This is what happens:

I've seen this happen before on my old CRT dual setups. I think it has to do with the refresh rates when windows goes into gaming mode. Try setting the 17" CRT to 60Hz, then launch a game and see what happens. I wound up just turning the 2nd monitor off in these cases.

Also- if you plan on playing a movie, etc while gaming, you won't be able to do it full screen. You'll have to window it by maximizing the program window. Windows likes to display fullscreen video on the primary display only.

Are you gaming at native res? If you're not, that happens.

Put your primary monitor on the right.

19" on the right and 17" on the left. I read this was the only way to fix it if you arent running games native res. I'm not 100% sure this will work but its likely it will. Also you will need to do a little messing around to get the task bar on the right. Just make 19" primary and extend (to the left) to the 17" shouldnt be to hard. If not pick up ultramon i'm sure you can do it with that.

for a little over 600 bucks Canadian at walmart you can get this exact setup (as far as monitors go) they are vga only. But as I've stated before, this is fine for the applications I use them with. not much gaming really. a bit of guild war lately. I haven't tried to get the game to span both screen yet either.

Got my dual 19's for less than $500 Canadian from Staples Time for you to shop around

Back to the topic, I had the same prob with my old dual CRT setup in some games, even with both at the same resolution, seemed to be the refresh rate that caused the problem.

well, I live in Trail BC, Canada. So shopping around isn't the easiest thing to do. We got a zellars, a walmart, canadian tire, source (radio shack),and a sears halfway point outlet (the stock a few things in a tiny space out here so it's cheaper to ship it further if need be), and a couple clothing stores like bootlegger and warehouse one. Nothing fancy here. And shipping is usually out of the question also, I'm going to be buying a 50" plasma and to have it shipped via tigerdirect is almost 400 bucks. sooooooo.... yeah.
