which is a better brand, which is the best at overclocking?

Lead,

Depends on what Patriots it is. I assume single sticks is all you have otherwise a kitted pair of 2 x 512 will be much better in dual channel.

The Ballistix clock well and depending on what Patriot you have, you can try them both as dual channel and see what you get if their timing and voltage is similar within reason. You have nothing to lose.

its the 1gb pc4000 (3.4.4.8) eased latency patriot ram:

Lead,

Give them a try in dual channel at default. They will run at the slowest speed stick. The biggest difference I see is voltage, the Patriot needs 2.6v and the Ballistix needs 2.8v. The Ballistix appears to be PC4000 too with similar timings.

The mixed set isn't the most recommended solution but it's not going to hurt anything trying them. Just give them both 2.8v in your BIOS and run some good tests first. May work together, may not.

im not looking to run the crucial and patriot together, im looking for another 1gb strip to go with my current 1gb strip of OCZ gold pc4000 (3.4.3.8 - are the stock timings). im not going to overclock them much in terms of frequency. Due to my cpu limitations and dividers used, i'll be running 255Mhz. im just looking for a combination that gives reasonable timings at 1T, somewhere in the order of stock 3.4.4.8 and below if i can.

the patriot runs at roughly 2.8v. It should be roughly compatable then with my setup, without too much hassle.

i'll buy either the crucial ballistix or the patriot ram, the price difference is minimal, which should i choose for reliability and potential overclockability in light of which patriot module could be bought

Lead,

OK, I would buy the Crucial to match it up. I think there is a better chance of getting an equal stick from them. The Ballistix seem to have more consistency from the Crucial web site.

I think what you want is here at the bottom:
