Is this correct?

I think motherboard manufactures have done a superb job on supplying us with good quality products but the one thing that lets me down and probably some other people is the description of say Sli/Crossfire.

Most people on these forums know that most motherboards that have got the Sli/Crossfire capability are just two PCI-Express slots. Not pacifically 2 x 16x PCI-Express slots.

But people who have little knowledge of computers think that when they are getting a SLI/Crossfire setup they think that they are getting 2 x PCI-Express slots both running at 16x but we all know this isn't all ways the case.

So running two graphics cards on SLI/Crossfire is brilliant but this is where manufactures let me and some of you down.

They dont state that most motherboards with the SLI/Crossfire are NOT running at 16x each lane. As soon as you enable SLI/Crossfire the default speed is 2 x 8x PCI-Express slots.

This is when you buy motherboards from the shops.

On the websites they do state this but home users dont normally check every bit of info. They normally just go with the shops info.

So is this down to the Shop that is telling us false information or the Manufacturer. not providing it properly.

Long post, sorry but im very keen in knowing this and hopefully other people will be more aware of this situation.

Yup, it's a bit of a bummer that the PCIe slots run slower than the what is indicated in the ads.

However, there are a few motherboards out there that do provide true dual x16 slots. More important, testing shows that current graphics cards are not bottlenecked by the slower PCI slots, so it really doesn't much matter at the moment.

Ah i see so for instance if you had a motherboard that has 2 x 16x PCI-express slots and another motherboard with that was defaulted to 2 x 8x PCI-Express and ran two graphics cards their would be minor differences in the benchmarks but not enough to really notice it while your playing?
