SMP + GPU?

I thought I saw a post about this somewhere (someone mentioned in passing that they were going to try it), but I was curious if anyone had tried this? That'd be SMP in Linux on VMware. Since it doesn't use 100% of the processor anyways, is the 15%-20% left over enough to keep the GPU happy? Or will it be a hit akin to the difference between VMware-Linux SMP and real-Linux SMP? Any forseeable difficulties?

No, and probabaly never will be,a s the GPU client runs via DirectX..but I'm going to try with A) Wine and B) Use either Xem, QEMU, or VMware and run linux native and virtualize windows.

But how is that any different from us windows guys virtualizing linux just for smp? Seems okay to me, just reversed from what we are doing.

I've done it. With my rig in my sig, it does nearly 1k ppd, pretty much stock settings (not much of an OC, vid card only). Its pretty good. I havent done it recently, because my parents are using the rig currently also, so I just cant leave it run when I'm at work.

GA-965P-DS3, E6600 2.40GHz, Corsair 2x512MB DDR2 800, and ATI Radeon X1900XTX;

SMP client Kubuntu 6.06 with VMware 1.0.1
p3027 TPF 10min 29sec

GPU client 3D clocks
p2736 TPF 8min 36sec

You can do the math.

I was on a P4 930, worked good and best 24/7 PPD average off the box possible. The GPU did not run wide open.

I just turned is off yesterday, daily (home evening email/web box) usage machine ans just got sick of it being slow. Only a gig ram in the box.

I am running this right now. Thought I had a problem so I reloaded the system and just now got everything backup and running. WinXP Pro running a VM of redhat custom made for folding (downloaded from a link at the [H]) and the GPU client running in windows.

The only problem Im having is the times in the VM are wrong. Its showing 1 frame completed every 1min 10 sec!! I know this is wrong but I dont know how to fix it.

Just out of curiosity, what processor? I've found that my Allendale, Conroe, and Kentsfield builds keep true time in VMware 1.0.1, no problem. But my A64 X2s and Opteron 165 all start fine initially, but then frame times are reported shorter and shorter. Even with the network time set to auto sync on the A64 X2s and Opteron 165 from the pool.org server, they still lose time on the system clock. While the C2Ds have no problems keeping the clock sync even though network sync is NOT on. Very strange.

mac. C'mon. We're lazy. I could do the times....it would take a bit of calculations, since I dont have EM-Calc handy....and...c'mon.

Interesting. We should get some other donors to post their processor and whether or not they are having the "timing" issue. I'm thinking this is somehow related to the processor and memory architecture. Yes, all three of my Athlons are Socket 939.

Its linked to the redhat version he downloaded. I had the same problem, yet others running VMware with Kubuntu and such had no problems with times... I posted the problem in another thread, and this is the conclusion that we came to, I think
mine was a 3800-X2, AM2

thats pretty sweet. I wonder if Mac is gonna try to VM the SMP client from windows and run the GPU natively to see if the results compare......
