My only real suggestion would be to not purchase the Core system. Friends don't let friends buy Core. Go Premium or don't bother, 'cause you'll end up spending as much as a Premium system in the long run if you buy a core, due to the lack of hard drive, wired controllers, no XBL! and no headset.

what is XBL?

mean i just put a new core 2 duo system together for the next gen direct x 10 games is it a smart idea to get an xbox on top of that?
Doesnt make much sense but it is tempting!

With the Premium bundle, you not only get a hard drive, wireless controller, and a headset, but you also get a 1 month trial subscription to Xbox Live! Gold (I think it's 1 month. It might be a bit longer).

I don't see why you wouldn't want to have an Xbox along with a PC that plays games. All that means is that you have more games to play. Some games are PC exclusive, and some are console exclusive. You get more games to play this way, which is always good.

dont think about it. buy it. (but beware of the 250 price tag) you are gonna have to spend around 500 to have what you want (you CAN NOT play online if you dont have a hard drive) thats another hundred ontop of your 250. then you rgonna need to buy xbox live (around 80 bucks for a year with a headset) and your gonna need the game you guys wanna play. im assuming gears of war ($60) or halo2 ($30) or call of duty ($40) soo...

console= 250
hdd = 100
xbl = 80
game = ~50

subtotal= 480
tax = 33.60

total = 513.60 (about)

so yah, if you can swing that i highly recomend a 360

Hahaha!

He doesn't need 500.

I got Gears for 37.99 (39 with tax) from target. He can get 3 months of live for 19.99. And he can get a headset for 10 if he shops around. So:

250 core system
100 HD
19.99 XBL
10 Headset
389.99

That's ten bucks off of a Premium system (which only comes with 1 month of live) plus he's got an extra two months.

I say go for it at that price.

true, but its cheaper to buy xbl by the year, and why not buy it for a year hes gonn wanna keep it. xbl is too sweet and 40 bucks for gears is an amazing deal.

so to be fair, my list included a year of xbl, the game (which you ignored) and tax. 389 x 7% (tax in youngstown, oh) = $27.30
389.99 + 27.30 = $417.36
so add the game and even 50 bucks (plus tax)= 53.50

417.36 + 53.50 = 470.86

so really the only thing you did was downgrade xbl and get a second hand, or aftermarket headset. sorry but for the extra 40 bucks id rather have 9 more months of xbl and a new official microsoft xbox headset.

im not sayin not to buy it. ABSOLUTLY buy a 360. im just saying you tryin to make it look to good to be true. when you REALLY add it all up you are looking at about 500 bucks. but it is still an amazing console.

But you're missing the point... I was contrasting getting the Core system for 250 versus getting the Premium for 400. If he's even LOOKING at a Core system... then money is obviously an object.

I'm saying he doesn't HAVE to spend all that money. You're also not noting the premium system only comes with ONE MONTH of XBL. (Which is what I have now.) So we're talking about raw... basic startup costs. What he would need to turn the system on and play.

389 plus the 40 bucks for the game on sale would put us at 430. And who knows where he found it for 250 at? Might not even have to pay taxes. It would be easier here because they actually have a gears of war bundle WITH the premium system for like 420 something... tax included. But they'd wind up about the same. And I wasn't talking about a third party headset either. Check Toys R Us or Gamestop when they have those 20 and 30 percent off all accessories sales.

Maybe it was just the holiday season... but I found all KINDS of deals.

(And... btw... the official Xbox headset is nothing to brag about. I personally wish the cable were a bit thicker for better sound quality... it's comfortable enough... but there are better solutions on the market. And the wireless headset cannot be used, according to my friend who was playing gears with me last night, while charging. And that just sucks. imagine being in the middle of a game of gears of war <like I was> and your buddy just disappears! And the only thing you can do is wait til he charges up! With the wireless controllers you can still play while charging...)

He has an HDTV and will absolutely want the HD cables that are included with the premium.

And either system will cost and extra $80-100 for the wifi if he can't hard wire it to get online.

Its a lot of cash for someone who is just a PC FPSer fan. Not saying the 360 doesn't absolutely own the PC in co-op shooters, but he probably won't like the controls and there are a very limited number of games he will play so it may not be worth the cash for him.

Maybe he can create a list O' games he is interested in.

Probably:

GoW
Lost Planet
CoD3
Halo 2
RS6:Vegas is on the PC isn't it?

Are there any other shooters that aren;t multiplatform between the two systems?

Oh yeah, PD0 and Far Cry Instincts Predator are cool, but not as good as the previously listed games.

Call of duty 3 is multiplatform as well.

And he can get component 360 cables for 14.99 from EB.

thats right, iforgot about the hd cables. so that puts rains deal at about 445 plus tax. im not sure what we are arguing here rain, im just saying buy the premium. it is worth it, specially if you can find a bundle with gears. that wouldbe an awsome deal for 420. whatever you do, buy yourself a 360 if you want to enjoy high def gaming. gears beats the pants of ANYTHING on pc. (sorry pc guys, but it does *pls dont flame me*, im sure you will get it soon enough)

Yeah... I forget what the hell we were talking about too...

Of COURSe he should get the premium edition. I personally had a chance to pick up a used 360 for like 260. I declined. But maybe at 250 I would've jumped on it. The thing is it's just nice to have everything you need in one box. Maybe he doesn't have 400 bucks. That's all I'm saying. But hell... I agree with you. He should GET 400 bucks.

Rob a bank or something...
