For those keeping score:

DS sold 1.6 million PSP sold 1.4 (so no more of this crap about Sony not selling the damned thing)

Wii and 360 were tied... even with MS's headstart. But the PS3 also sold half as many systems as the 360 sold for the whole year in just two months.

And of course PS2 sales trumped them all. So Sony's pain... at this point... is only relative. Combined PS3, psp, and PS2 sales absolutely DROWNED the competition in 2006. Still *I* won't be getting a PS3 until they make a smaller one.

I read somewhere that PSP2 is in the works as we speak...dunno when though. Sony plans to get another 1 ~ 2 years out of the PSP.

Well the next Gameboy is likely to be out way before that. I barely noticed the time in between the Gameboy advance SP and the DS. The time between the DS and the DS Lite was virtually non-existent (boy is my buddy p***** about that...) I think Sony could actually go much further with the PSP than 2 years. It's already two and a half DSes worth of power. The processor already cranks out 333mhz. So the least they could do is let programmers other than Rockstar use the max speed. That would get them 3 years right there.

It's got the USB connection... it's ready to handle memory sticks of any size. Only future consideration I can think of is slapping an 80gig flash drive in the thing and having the system feature 100 percent downloadable content. That would put the nail on the coffin.

Cool, glad you see some real numbers as everything else I have seen from the "NPD" so fair as turned out to be numbers that were not yet even released to the public.

I have heard that the 'PSP2' isn't really the next PSP, it is meant to be a warmed over version of the original with most of the same hardware, a prettier exterior and a micro HDD.

Depending upon the size (there was some talk of it being 80GB) I might br temptrd to swap, because I use my PSP more as a movie player than a gaming device.

You flew through that article too fast.

"As for which piece of hardware proved to be the most popular for the month, the Nintendo DS led all systems with 1.6 million units sold, trailed by the PlayStation 2 (1.4 million units sold) and the Xbox 360 (1.1 million units sold).

The newcomers to the mix fell a little short of analysts' projections, as the Wii sold 604,200 units in December, while the PS3 managed to move 490,700 system sales. Combined with their November hardware sales tallies, the Wii sold 1.1 million systems in the US through the end of the year, while Sony managed to move 687,300 PS3s."

So DS>PS2>360>Wii>PS3 for sales as the 1.4 million was the PS2, not PSP. I didn't see PSP figures, but still have to finish the article, although it looks more like a $$$ break down of the industry and the 360 sales figures are for the month of december where the PS3 and Wii numbers are from launch to the end of the year.

I guess I am just splitting hairs though as everything sold well, or as well as it could with limited supplies this holiday season and I have no doubts the PSP sold well also.

ps doesn't the NPD typically release north american sales figures or are these likely world wide figures?

By golly you're right... My eyes must have been playing tricks on me (I was up all night). Let it never be said that I can't admit when I'm wrong. The DS Lite did ASTONISHINGLY well this holiday season, and Nintendo did a MUCH better job of keeping them in stock then they did the Wii... Hell *I* got a DS this holiday season... that's saying something.

And if the Wii was in stock anywhere... I would've gotten that too. Instead I got a 360. I wonder how many people THAT wound up happening to? How many mothers saw that core system sitting over there for 50 bucks more? How many father's just said "screw it" and got their kids the premium?

Wii did well enough, but they could've done better. Me and about 20 other people on this site would have one by now if they did. Unfortunate really. Because, for my birthday... I'm either looking at a new video card or a scanner. Unless I hit big at the casinos... I just won't have enough room for another console.

Theres are the december figures ive been gave, DS and PS2 are selling awesome, and its seems the GBA is still giving the PSP a run for its money.
Courtesy of NPD
HW Sales
Nintendo DS 1.6 mm
PS2 1.4 mm
GBA 850.7 K
Xbox 360 1.1 mm
Wii 604.2 K
PSP 953.2 K
PS3 490.7 K

There is just one thing to consider though, with those figures for the PS3. They report the number sold. They don't report the number returned, which I have heard many many stories of recently. How well would Sony be doing after calculating that?

Sony has sold that many consoles. It's just the stores that Sony sold them tohaven't sold all of their stock yet. Once they hit the store shelves, Sony no longer owns them. The only consoles that would change the number of consoles sold by Sony would be failed units sent in on warranty, unable to be repaired.

Touche, I had not considered that. But, my mindset is still on the overall popularity of the consoles. Just going on next-gen, I would have to say 360>Wii>PS3, though with the handhelds its an obvious DS>PSP.

Noo... the correct thing is: DS>EVERYTHING remember? The DS beat ALL the other consoles this holiday season. PS2 included. Beat the Wii, too.

If the DS had as much publicity as the Wii it could probably be classified as a cultural phenomenon in the US like it is in Japan.

The Hippy Movement was a cultural phenomenon. They only sold 1.1 million Wiis. That doesn't make the cut :p

Gotta read a bit better my man. I knew there was no way the PS3 or Wii was close to selling 10 million units which is what the 360 did in a years time. Hell Sony didn't even produce 1/5 of that worldwide.

When the hell did I say THAT?!?

You're getting me confused with that bottle :p
