When writing an email in Outlook Express, the spell checker is not highlighted or working and how do I get it to stay in Rich Text (HTML)?

Tools->Options->Send tab->Under Mail Sending Format, ensure HTML is selected.
As far as spell check goes, have you made any changes under the Spelling tab or uninstalled/changed/updated any Office components?

yes.
just had a new win xp o/s installed and my office 2003 was not installed at this time and is not installed today.
i will have the office 2003 cd tomorrow.
will not having the office 2003 installed keep the spell checker from working on outlook express?

You will have a spell check, but the old generic one that comes with Wordpad. Office has the fully functional spell check with all the goodies. It will return upon reinstalling Office.
