Inexplicable temp rise

Just like that, my system temperature has gone up from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius, CPU from 34 to 40 on boot and 45 while surfing, which looks like 45 in idle now. Northbridge from 27 to 40. I've changed nothing in the cooling configuration. At all. I don't feel the change with my own hand, either, but SpeedFan confirms the readings and I'm worried. The temps are only going up, not down. No OC on the system before you ask.

There are two problems: OS shutdown problems and temp rise. Each belongs in a different forum. Mentioning other problems that pop up together with what you're asking about helps people help you (in casu: help me). It doesn't make double-posting but simply adds some explanation. I'm surprised you'd waste your energy to say nothing meaningful but something like that. If you have no constructive advice to offer, I'd rather you didn't take part. No hard feelings.

In the meantime, my CPU temp has risen to 56 in idle without reason. :S Does anyone know what might be going on?

Did your room temp take a a jump ?
did you update bios ?
noting was added or changed ?

It went like this:

1. Temps are 35/39/36 or close. I get a plug-less 12V 80mm fan from an old AT PSU.
2. My more manually able and electronically savvy friend removes the isolation from a part of the cable between CPU fan and its plug. He connects the fans together on one plug and the recycled fan works as sysfan. Temps fall to 24/34/27. I hang a recycled 60mm fan on power cables using two binders. I make sure the binders don't touch anything. I tighten the screws on HDD, PSU, DVD and mobo to limit vibrations.
3. Things work but suddenly I can't shut Windows down. I have to reboot the computer a couple of times as a result. I notice the temp rise either then or when checking if the 60mm fan there made any difference. Temps are again 30+/40/35+ and they rise. CPU heats up to 45 degrees while websurfing.
4. I remove mobo and reapply the heatsink (I remembered some CPU unworkable/frequency changed message from BIOS when booting once). I put everything back in. CPU temp rises.
5. Finally, now I have 50 degrees Celsius at boot. I've removed the potentially offending fans (disconnecting the new one didn't work), laid the computer on the ground, putting an old Intel box fan on the Thermalright heatsink. Sys temp is a gentle 36 (although I had 24 a couple of hours ago), CPU temp is 57.5 while websurfing, Northbridge temp is fluctuating between 46 and 54 within split seconds as it sees fit (literally 46-54-50-46-etc in ABIT EQ). The system still won't shut down when option chosen.

No BIOS update. Slight room temp changes, cooled down again by now. Basically, temps gained 10-20 degrees each on the same hardware without any intervention at some point. Each time I did something or even merely rebooted, the temp was higher. In the morning, I'm getting the most powerful 92mm fan for the processor and I'm going to see what happens then. Won't probably get my great temps back but will at least be able to play games without risk. :S

Edit: Thank you for your kind attention. Problem solved. It looks like installing uGuru was a bad idea. I swear I've no idea how, but after doing System Restore I have much lower temps now and the only thing that comes to mind is uGuru. Nothing else could possibly have touched temp measures or sensors or anything. Ihave 32/36(!)/35 now and I'm using guess what... a molex 3 fan from a Celeron box cooler. It seems to work better than my 80mm fan did.

Let me get this straight you spliced your CPU fan plug?????

hmmmm.... maybe u cut the volts in half when u added the fan to it

Nope. I didn't touch the plug. But yep, I added another fan on the same lead. One cable, two fans. Some peeling and some insulation, you know. But I think this time (I cut one off while trying to fix the problem), I'll stick with one fan on one lead.

It looks like it really was uGuru, although I for some reason get 45 degrees at power on, less only in Windows. Perhaps adding the other fan lowered the voltage each of them two gets, so as a result I now have higher temps on the CPU. I don't know, to be honest.

How dusty is your case? I've seen them go from first to worst in days in a dusty area.

Start doing things like opening up your side panel to see if there's a difference. Obviously this isn't the solution, but it will help you to see if speedfan may just be buggy or something. You should see a change, probably lower in temp.

If that doesn't work, start opening up more of the case and be sure the fans are left on.

If that doesn't work, try finding some different temperature monitoring fans.

Your temps probes on your mobo may be going crazy for some reason, you may want to flash your bios regardless, just to see if it helps.

Good Luck

I dust my case regularly and the last time it was open was today. It was quite clean and neat and the temps were marginally better.

I donno what uguru is, but maybe its effecting your system temp monitors, unless you have an external.

even so, s;icing 1 fan would not impact your case temp.

so assuming your case fans are still working, and/or the dust filters are clean. doesnt make any sense that youd have a real heat jump.

My exact thoughts.

However, there are some potential problems. For example, the expulsion fan (80mm) is close to the CPU fan that blows down, so there's a chance they're trying to suck air from the same place, which would explain worse temps on the CPU compared to before (before = before sysfan). Additionally, sysfan is stronger than CPU fan - it's a powerful jet blower back from the AT days. I've noticed that the CPU fan blowing down cools both the system and (auxiliarily) PWM, so leaving it alone or, better, replacing it with a 92mm fan could be a better investment. I could also try with an intake sysfan.

Another idea I've had is that maybe power levels drop and each fan blows worse than on its own.
