Ugh, this always seems to happen.

So after doing a bunch of research I bought the parts to build this system, and sure enough as soon as the parts get here, I start finding information making me second guess my purchases. I went with the P5W-DH Deluxe, the E6300, and the 2GB Micron D9GMH set from tankguys.biz. Now from what I'm reading (now that everythings waiting to be put together) I would have been better off with the P5B, the E4300, and maybe even a cheaper set of ram. Now, none of this stuff is out of the box yet, so I'm wondering, if i want to get somewhere in the stable 3+ ghz range, should i spend the extra money and time sending this stuff back? Is it really impossible to get 500+mhz FSB out of the P5W-DH? Even after restocking fee's and return shipping I'm probably still saving money switching to the P5B and E4300, I just want to make sure it's worth the effort. Anyone have any advice?

Interesting question, I wouldn't take the time to do it, but saving money and going faster are always good...

My only real advice is to post this in the Intel forum, as the folks there will have much more to say on this issue.

Most of the members here would pick a E6300 over a E4300.

The P5B does seem to have a higher FSB than the P5W. I don't know what our max o/c will be but I would think that you might get some pretty good results (7x400=2.8). I would try it first and go from there.

Good Luck!

Nothing wrong with what you have.

The P5w DH is an excellent motherboard it just doesn't do 500mhz like the P5b.

The e6300 is the only thing I would look at replacing and that would be with a 6400 or 6600 for the extra multipliers.

The ram has d9gmh chips if you want to push your cpu your not going to find anything with d9gmh chips for cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm still fighting the urge to swap for a P5B (3.5ghz just sounds sooo much better than 2.8), but seeing as stability is far more of an issue than raw speed, I may just stick with the P5W. I'll give myself a few more days to chew on it. Anyone else have an opinion?

What are you going to cool the chip with? If you are going air, you won't get alot more out of a p5b

edit: and you'll be able to put your harddisks in matrix raid with the p5w, which is very nice

I'm cooling the CPU with a Scythe ninja plus, though water cooling is on the horizon. I've heard of a lot of people making the 3.4-3.6ghz mark on the E6300 with that cooler. In addition I plan on doing the NB and SB cooling mods (removing covers and adding fans and AS5).

After finding some information on upping the MCHv with a pencil mod, apparently stable FSB speeds in the 500mhz range are possible with this board. This is of course providing the chip will even be a decent overclocker. For all I know it won't do better than factory ratings. For now I think I'll stick with this board, see how far I get with the bios, turning to vmods as a last resort. Thanks everyone for your replies!
