Mid-range build, parts listed.

So I'm building my 1st computer since 2001, and I know I'll be a little rusty about what's the best for everything, but this is what I have come up with so far:

Intel E6600

Asus P5B Delux WiFi

MEMORY: I want 2 GB, and I'd like dual-channel, but I won't be OCing it and I'm curious what you guys would recommend

HD : WD 250gb Caviar 7200rpm 16mb cache

VidCard : EVGA GeForce 8800GTS

Case and Fans are what I need some help with also; I think it'll be a pretty solid system for a pretty long time, so just lemme know what you guys think so far, and what you'd recommend.

I look forward to your replies

Are you overclocking the CPU, but not the RAM or you don't plan to O/C at all?

If you O/C the CPU, but not the RAM, then check out these G.Skill.

Everything looks good so far, but you forgot the PSU, that's very important.

If you don't plan to OC, can you get the P5W DH? It's only $10 more and has the 975 chipset.

Here is a solid PSU if you are looking for one.

Is there a reason why you are choosing not to OC?

oh I'm sorry I should have been more clear.

I was planning on OCing the CPU to around 3.2 , since I hear that's about a safe spot, the memory I have no experience with OCing so I was going to NOT OC the Memory.

Is the set up fairly good? What about a good case and fan set up?

Of all the places, you all seemed the most knowledgable, so I really look forward to learning some more.

oh yes I did, what would you reccomend for a PSU for a set up like mine?

I remember in 2001, I just used the one that came with the case, now things seem so much more advanced, heh.

as far as the mobo goes, I was reading the NewEgg reviews and I sort of had the impression that the P5B was a much easier board to work with then the P5W . That was why I chose that, but I could be way wrong

The P5B is just better for overclocking when you need high FSB. The P5W sounds like the perfect board for you since you want to stay around the 3.2Ghz range. The E6600 has a 9x multi so you may be able to hit something like 3.6Ghz while keeping the memory at DDR2-800.

Here is a good PSU for a nice price:

agreed, your doing what im doing with my e6600 right now. 400 FSB with ddr-800 ram. with g.skill ram. worked out great. but im using a gigabyte DS3 and it didn't quite hit 400 fsb with a slight increase in voltages., right now im a bit on the lazy side trying to get it to 400. ill do that later.

If I did switch boards to the P5W , and got around 3.6 my cooling needs would increase dramatically, wouldn't they? I hear that the dual core Conroe's are great with low-heat but it just seems like it would become a little hot at that speed.

Thanks for all the help so far everyone

Also, any pointing to a case or cooling set up? I want to air-cool.

Thank you

The Zippy PSU that Inkfx mentioned in post #8 is definitely good. This Sparkle (made by Fortron) is also decent for the price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103517

Asus P5B-Deluxe or P5W DH or both good. There is some slight performance advantage with the E6600 on an i975X chipset like the P5W DH or Abit AW9D like I have (see siggy).

The case is a matter of personal preference. Look for something with plenty of fan mounting places, preferably 120mm openings. For heatsink recommendations, check out the cooling section.

Yes, you would most likely need better cooling for those kind of speeds. I was just giving you a theoretical speed you would be able to hit. If you are going to be running the stock cooling I think somewhere around 3.2Ghz will be your limit because of heat.
