Looking to build a new pc, im on a budget. Wanted to make a E6600 with a 8800gts but i think its going to be a bit out of my price range. I am thinking a AMD 4600X2 7950* or something around that, anyone know a good OC format for AMD? Im a bit confused with amd's overclock procedure, is it just fsb*multiplier? ive seen posts with people talking about HT link and stuff, can ayone briefly explain this to my noobish self?

Thanks :)!

For the 4600, go with the 65W version either Windsor or Brisbane. DFI Infinity AM2 is a great board that works well both in semi auto oc as well as full tweeker.

You have 4 settings on AMD chips for oc

CPU Frequency or HTT sometimes refered to as FSB ranges from 200-300+.
CPU Multi ranges from 4X to 13X+
LDT or HT link works as 200,400,600,800 or 1000 times 2 as AMDs have dual IO channels, one in and one out for a max total of 2000.
MEM clock is a divider driven by bios which is different on AM2 as opposed to 939. Both are dividers directly off the CPU speed.
...AM2 Memclock settings are 200,266,333,400
...939 Memclock settings are 100,133,166,183,200,216,233

4600 basic settings are like such for a set of DDR800 (HTT x Multi / MemDiv.

Stock - 200 X 12 = 2400 / 6 = 400 (DDR800)
Oced! - 250 x 12 = 3000 / 6 = 500 (DDR1000)

yah 4600 is a great CPU.. If you intend to overclock go with an even cheaper one. Im running mine stock and its smoooth

The 7950... I dont think there is anything that tops a x19 series before the 8800s though. And IIRC they are around the same price point (little over 200..)

Unless you mean the gx2... although I think thats awaste of money too since not all games perform better in SLI.

Are you looking for an AM2 or socket 939 system?
(Depends on if you want new DDR2 RAM or want to use old DDR)

Opterons are pretty cheap these days and clock higher than X2s

Im gunna stick with athe 8800gts, one on newegg for 400-40$ rebate + a free 4gb flash drive, if im going to OC, what cpu would you recomend that can still get close to same clock rates as a 4600?

in the www.scan.co.uk's today only section theres a 7900gto for 145 pounds which equates to about 180 dollars, man if i waited id have got one of thos bad boys over my 7900gs any day

maan i got my 939 x2 3800+ for 130 quid at christmas, the am2 ones are 56 quid in that today only thats half what i payed!! :'(

thanks for OC format for AMD!!

Glad to see that AMD returned to a non funky memory divider :)

Hybrid:

Any of the X2 cpus should OC to 2.4GHz (4600 speed) MY 4200 did 3GHz once.. but after I tried for 3150 I was never able to hit 3GHz again

Did 2.75 24/7 though at VERY cool temps.

Thats socket 939 though.

As already mentioned 65nm should OC well.

Do you think that it degraded?
It appears that we likely have a gradual Toledo death syndrome.
