~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again, Thanks for taking the time to allow me to interview you.
When did you join the Team? Approximate date is ok if you don't know the specific date.
I have no idea... Extreme overclocking stats show 1.1.2004 but I remember wondering about that ages ago thinking I started alot earlier... Is there a way to tell? I probably suffer from some kind of dementia and can't remember things
If there was something recent that you did that you wanted your fellow teammembers to know about, what would it be?
Outproduced WEDO (in PPD)
It's quite an achievment for me since him and Nihksub have allways kind of been folding idols for me
What is your EOC (extremeoverclockers) stats link?
EOC
You do not have to give specifics (address), but what State do you live in, and if you don't mind telling, what town? (town is not required, but if not a town, a general direction and distance from the nearest 'big town/city' would suffice)
I live in Helsinki, Finland (Europe). I've also lived near London and in Beirut for a few years (each).
How did you initially hear about F@H?
Followed a link in somebody's sig here on the forums.
After starting, why do you continue to Fold?
To make use of extra processing cycles in computers around me. I also enjoy the competitive aspect, though it's very secondary.
What do you do for a living?
I'm an IT Engineer. Basically I maintain a a production environment consisting of Linux, Unix and (a few) Windows servers, a SAN, switches (Fiber, iSCSI, Ethernet), backups, monitoring and of course the services running on the machines.
I also study in University, though it's hard to find sufficient time working full time (and more) and having a family.
What do you do for fun?
Mountain biking, hanging out with my family, reading
Is there anything special you do in your spare time that you really enjoy?
I haven't had any spare time in years!
Time to spill your guts. What are the stats of your main folding rig? Why is it your fave? What all do you use the rig for?
No main rig folding since the timeout for the osx-smp client is so short and I can't keep my home computer on 24/7 (or my wife complains).
Do you have a Borg-Farm? If so, how many computers, and what are they? (CPU, RAM)
I Borg machines around me as long as I get permission for it. When I started I worked in a helpdesk and borged my coworkers computers. They are not producing anymore, and I had quite a long "silent period" between. Now I borg servers which are not in production yet. I don't have alot of rigs, but they are mostly pretty fast:
linux smp-client:
2* HP DL580 4* Opteron 880 (8 cores) 32GB ram
HP DL380 G5 2* Xeon 5150 (4 cores) 8GB ram
Intel Engineering sample 2* Xeon 5150 4GB ram
Intel barebone 2*3Ghz Xeon 6GB ram
Clone with AMD X2 3800+ 4GB ram
linux client:
HP DL380 G5 2* Xeon 5150 4GB ram (only folding nights)
2* Intel barebone 2*3Ghz Xeon 4GB ram (only folding weekends)
Fujitsu-Siemens 2*3Ghz Xeon 4GB ram
2* Clone P4 2.8-3ghz 1GB ram
Apple ppc client
2* Xserve 2*G4 ?mhz 2GB ram
Apple smp-client
1 C2D macbook pro 2.33ghz 2GB ram
What are your future goals? What do you most want to accomplish with your life?
Wow, what a hard question. [explanations] This is actually something I've been meaning to plan in a concrete manner, but have not had the time [/explanations]
For the moment I'm aiming at constantly having work that forces me to learn new intresting things. I spent 5 years working in a helpdesk some years ago and looking back I should have started to push forward after about 2 years. It's easy to get stuck in a comfortable position, but to get anywhere you need challenges, failures and achievements. It's hard to think forward when you are content with what you have, and that's my situation just now.
I'm also hoping I'll have the energy to get through my studies so I can spend more time with my wife and kid, and not end up as busy as my father was when I was young (not looking very promising right now)...
Note to everyone, studying will never get easier then it is now, so just push through it and be lazy later. It's not nice being over 30 years old and trying to make up for all the lazy years of your youth.
If there is something you want to tell the team, then spill your guts! What have I missed in my questions that could help the team learn more about you and who you are?
My computer tweaking "goals" changed a few years ago from maximum performance to a balance between maximum silence and adequate performance. My last two builds where dead silent, with the only way to know they are running to look at the lights or screen.
I later sold all my pc's and moved to macs 'cause I prefer the operating system and wanted to find a way to stop the constant urge to tweak the computer (and get new parts). I love my current computer which is an iMac Core 2 Duo 2.33ghz with 2GB ram. It must be among the most silent stock computers existing (though not as silent as my latest builds) and has a great screen.
And this time, Dropadrop had sent us a pic too!!
Here's a 3 year old picture of me in Dahab, Egypt.
I was wondering about that as well. My EOC stats show the same starting date, but coincidentally, that was around the time I started folding. Does anybody know if 1.1.2004 is the earliest date that EOC stats shows?
Nice to meet you dropadrop
Those are very nice borgs you have going
On 01.01.2004 ... i am pretty sure from reads somewhere (eoc stats news or faq maybe) that the stats system there had a major revamp at that time and that is why it is the earliest date shown there.
Not sure how individual stats track before that since i only pulled my own and i started after that date.
Try downloading your individual stats (uses a .csv or xml i think) and you may
see daily summaries prior to 01.01.2004.
Stanford prolly has it too but not sure where.
Great folding with you drop
- Pete
By any chance do you mean "Into Thin Air?" Or are there just multiple books about Mt. Everest with similar titles?
Ahh, I see. I just searched for my first post about folding and found that I started on 12-14-03, so a couple weeks before the EOC revamp. I knew it was close to 1.1.2004, but I thought I started slightly earlier. Anyway, sorry for the threadjack.
That was a good idea
Seems my first time posting in the folding forum was in April 2003, and I was asking for help with the client.
My production goes up and down, but it will be going mostly down for a little while. Of the two 8-core servers that have been my main producers, one has not been folding for a while, and I should install Redhat on the other one next week too (after which no extra applications like fah will be installed). I also had 3 quad core servers with Xeon 5150's which have not been folding for over a week.
Unfortunatly I've also been too busy to make sure everything else is running, hopefully next week I'll be at the office more then trainings and meetings and will be able to install fah on a few new quad core (dual dualcore) Xeons.
