telemarketer or IRS???

I just got a call from a guy (indian guy) saying that he's with the IRS and he wanted to offer me a $5000 dollar grant for paying my taxes on time and he said it was though the government and wouldn't have to be payed back.. he also said i was selected from 15 houses in the state of california. It sounds like BS to me, but why would he say it was the IRS, not some other company. its got me itching my head.. is there really such an offer or is it BS? i googled the heck out of it and couldn't find anything. the ID when the guy called was blank and the number was 000-000-0000 :-S

Contact the IRS and ask them. They know what programs they offer. If it's more than just a telemarketer (ie: scammer) they might want the details you have to help protect others from being scammed.

If it was really the IRS I am pretty sure the caller ID would say "U.S. GOVERNMENT" or something almost that. I have gotten calls from military to research places and they say the same thing. That call you got was B.S. even if the story was not as extremely fishy as it was.

Any call from the government will show up as U.S. Government, or the actual dept. such as, Dept. of Rev. ect.

And first and formost, the government does not pay you for paying your taxes on time They only care if you don't pay them or haven't payed enough.

Indeed. Can you imagine the public outcry if they found out that their tax dollars were being distributed via a lottery?

Just make sure you mail all of your personal and banking information in a non-marked envelope to the third-world country he tells you to. Make sure you also include a blank cheque, it'll speed up the transfer.

/end bad idea

Tell him you'll take the money, but don't give him any personal info or bank account info, and definitely don't send him any cash.

I did see a news report a year or more ago about the irs sending tax information and what not to those countries that have accents related to the one you speak of, for processing. They were doing it for the same reasons why many American companies do it.....

Either way, it does sound fishy.

they called back and i told them that i called the IRS (not really) and they said they didn't offer anything like that, so he said they weren't the irs, but worked with them, then i just hung up the phone.

these things just get worse and worse..

There are several scams going around like this. One of which a person gets on the phone as an angry IRS agent and demands this and that including SS#, bank accounts, etc.

Anytime something includes money and it is free -- run away.

not always

*free $1000 a month for every month for the rest of your life! just pm your SS#, bank account information, and a complete set of dental records to freakdiablo!*

I say use the same technique my friend uses for telemarketers if he calls back. Go to a local shooting range and leave a tape recorder or something set up. When he calls back, about 10 seconds in just say, "umm hold on, someones at the door." and put it up to the recorder and hit play. then silence. If he is doing something illegal, he probably wont call the cops

Draw them out in the phone call. Make them repeat the information several times.

You know it's fake, they know it's fake. Play with them.
