SMP Alternative

Is there one? I like the point gain of it, plus being able to help contribute on a field such as SMP folding which is still new, even though I am not natively running Linux. However, I can't stand this constant 100% CPU usage on my desktop computer anymore. When trying to do some of the simplest things, I have to wait for it (IE, opening up Outlook 07 from the tasktray), sometimes for several minutes, because VMWare is taking up 100% of my CPU. As far as I can tell, it's not passive like natively running F@H is. It's not getting the call from other programs or the OS itself that it needs to free up some resources.

Its not pasive because you have to run VMWare. IF you opened firefox inside VMWare I'd bet it would be slightly faster than opening Firefox in windows.

What I'm getting to is just run Linux Natively. I don't notice any speed decreases, its just as passive as running the standard client. I've even played a little WS:ET with no issues will folding SMP in native linux.

Are you only running SMP/VM client? How much ram is in the box? Technically if only running SMP/VM it should only take ~ 80% total CPU.

No, VM does not give up cpu ticks.

My .02c is ditch the SMP/VM client until the Win SMP client is out. I got sick of a slow machine (VM/SMP) too. Install 2x uni cpu clients and enjoy things until the next thing.

I've already considered that, but unfortunately my hardware is not the most playful with Linux right now, so I will have to wait a few months for some better support.

Yes, only SMP/VM. 1GB of DDR2 ram. 95-100% CPU usage by VMWare.

I had 1 GB and noticed my system bogged down quite a bit on the bigger WU's, after upgrading to 2GB and setting Vmware's priority to below normal it was almost like regular windows folding.

I couldn't either, I robbed the ram from my other folding rigs

But changing the priority in windows for vmware does help.

So I've read,

What is it that you are exactly having issues with? I'd be willing to go step by step over any issues you have in order to try and get you running native linux. I might suggest you grab the latest debian etch "testing" from here.

I probably will do a debian install. I know that last time I did an etch install on my DFI Lanparty Ultra D, the install FREAKED OUT and wouldn't even boot. I will try it again. I know that my current debian cd wont install. Can't find the drivers from the cd drive WHICH IT IS BOOTING FROM.

Sig rig. And, Ubuntu 6.10 works, minus the fact that there are quirks (dunno why the loading screen never works, there are times when it wont load, and a thing here and there).

I should tell you that on my C2D laptop I'm unable to install Ubuntu 6.10. For some weird reason I get no video on the live cd. Also the latest Etch cd should boot, if it doesn't then go grab Mepis, I know for a fact that it boots. Debian Etch is still in testing so every week more bugs are fixed..

question also, how much ram do you have assigned to the Virtual Machine? That could be hurting a little bit too...

You can't do that (says access denied when you try)

But if you install the VMWare tools, you can use this:

This sets it to a lower priority when you are not using it. but you have to install VMWare tools or it will not work!

Just grab a VM application image from the VMWare website. Download, load it into VMWare, download F@H, and it's ready to go.

No installing, configuring, etc. (unless you just want to do that).

I tried that and it was nice and easy and all...but the network did not work (and i had no clue how to make it work)
