LCD - Video Card Compatability?

Hey guys,

I'm getting a used computer from my sister which I built for her about 4 years ago. It's got a MSI GeForce 3 Ti200 Pro-td, 64 MB, with analog and DVI outputs. I'll be wanting a LCD display, probably 19" non-wide screen. I'm not a FPS gamer and basically be using for office apps, internet and less graphics intensive games. Never used/bought a LCD before.

Will there be any problems driving the newer LCDs with an old video card?

Motherboard (Soyo Dragon +) is AGP 4X, would it be of any benefit to get maybe a GeForce FX 5500, 256MB card?

Any opinions as to good makes/models for sharp on-screen fonts?

Are there any test programs I can get Best Buy to use to evaluate a monitor?

TIA,

-Ed

There shouldn't be any problems as long as your card can deliver desired resolution at at least 16bit color depth, which with 64MB it should not have a problem with. Whether to upgrade the card will pretty much depend on what are those "less graphics intensive" games. For general duties you'll be fine, but games, that could be another matter entirely and since you already have a card best thing is to test and see what happens.

Thanks AM. Yeah, I had a video card similar to the MSI and I think the card should push 32 bit color depth at 1280 x 1024, which seems to be the native resolution of the 19"ers.

I use Newegg for most of my hardware purchases but I'm thinking to buy locally and actually go out and compare the LCDs, now that I know the video card is a non-factor.

Any tips on how to do a proper comparison at the store?

Do you guys, when making a purchase at a store, have them breakout the monitor you're buying and check for things like dead pixels and backlight bleeding right there in the store?

Cheer,

you can get em on newegg for 199.99, but if i was to spend 200 bucks on another LCD it would probably be for the SCEPTRE NAGA or GAMER 20.1" widescreen
