What is a server computer good for?

What all can I use them as, like can I host game servers? like Battlefield 2 and americas army. or would I just be better off buying them from a game server hosting place?

Unless you have killer internet, that's a bad idea. You would be way better off just buying a server from a company. Home servers (FTPs) are usually used as mass storage devices. I plan on setting one up sometime soon.

I have a 2U Dell server in my house....
It serves as my firewall/DHCP server..it does ALL my torrent activities...(legal of course)
It also, serves up all my movies and music to any computer in the house, and is connected up to my Plasma TV in the living room for watching movies.....


Its in my bedroom closet, and I don't think its been rebooted in 2 years ..
