Which yields best performance?

Which type of AMD cpu would yield the best performance in things like games? What I have, the 64 FX 55(2.6Ghz), a 64 X2 around 2.0-2.2 Ghz, or an opteron around 1.8ghz? I keep thinking what I have because its stock is 2.8Ghz, however There is also the concern of having the benefits of dual core. Which will give me the best benefits(OC, game performance, etc) ? I noticed the opteron and FX55 have a higher L2 cache then the X2. Is having dual core going to be better, or what I have currently? I have heard the FX is the best for OC, but even if that is true I am curious about game performance as it is going to be my main purpose of the pc.

Currently games that take advantage of dual-core CPUs are extremely rare. For most games your chip is going to easily be better than any of the others you mentioned. Now for general usage, multitasking, video rendering, stuff like that dual-core will show major benefits. Compared at stock speeds your chip easily trounces the others you mention in gaming performance because gaming performance will mostly be dictated by clock speed, extra cache makes maybe 5% difference, and the extra core only takes advantage of games that are optimized for it. When overclocked the difference between the chips becomes minimal because their max overclocks are seperated by several hundred megahurtz, and I'm willing to bet that in a blind test you couldn't tell the difference.

Generally the FX chips seem to overclock the best, the Opterons are close behind, and the X2s a little behind those. Also keep in mind that there are also dual-core Opterons (those named 165 and up).

I would stick to what you have unless you get into heavy multitasking or start using a game/application which is dual-core optimized. Chances are you will hit close to 3ghz with your current chip, and that is plenty for any game on the market. Most games are GPU limited nowadays.

Which Opteron is it?

I would go for the Dual Cores anyway, just because 1 core handles background tasks while the other handles the game.

Although if gaming is ALL you do, I would grab a nice Athlon 64 or so rather than dump heaps on an FX (if you dont have it already)
