I don't want automatic updates enabled, so I disabled them. The problem with this is the icon stays in my system tray pestering me. I have managed to disable windows security centre, but I can't find out how to disable this updates icon. I have tried terminating the process but it starts itself again. I've looked at the vista sticky.

Can anyone suggest how I might get rid of it?

Side issue that doesn't deserve its own thread: can anyone tell me if I'll be able to use my version of Visual Studio 2005 on vista without any problems?

Hit start>control panel>security center>

On the left select> Change the way Security Center Alerts Me

'Do you want to be notified of security issues', Select the last item on the list to remove the icon and shut off notifying you that auto update should be enabled.

You can also fine tune other things there, but this is the fix to your problem.

Thanks for the response, SSS.

That's the way I disabled the security centre notifications, but I am still left with an icon in my tray which, when I highlight it, reads "Updates are not being installed automatically" and occasionally pops up a balloon telling me that too. It persists through reboot and doesn't go away with the steps you suggested.

Ok, Try this:

For Vista

For XP

I have tried those, but the thing is still running. It's a process called wuauclt.exe, which I seem unable to rename, and when I terminate it it is back within a minute.

Why would you want to disable the updates?

Some (like myself) like to update manually. I go click for updates in my downtime before bed or something instead of the system trying to install / reboot when in the middle of something important.
