Wow.......this pretty much puts my dell to shame (especially in the gfx department) and I paid about 200 dollars more for it about a year ago.....:(

I've been looking for a laptop for a month or so and was thinking about a Dell refurb, which can be a very good deal. But, d94, I just went to my sort-of local OfficeMax and picked this guy up. I wasn't thinking of a 17" display since it is pretty awkward for my needs, but it was just too tempting. This is cheaper than anything I was looking at, and if it really has a single stick of ram, then I can plop in a gig from Newegg and run virtual machines on it. An Anandtech post says that this is the stuff for it, and on sale:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?CMP=AFC-TechBargains&Item=N82E16820145048

This is one big machine though. I will need a new bag for it. Maybe something on Newegg.

The hardsell on the 3 year plan was tough, I think the poor salesguy was going to kill himself if I didn't buy it, but I didn't anyway.

Thanks for the post d94.

np man
is the KB too akward
and btw you can put in a 2nd HD :santa: SURPRISE!

I'll add somethings else. I need this for presentations, connecting to a VGA projector. This doesn't come with VGA out although it does have DVI and, I think, svideo (it's labeled TV OUT). So I called tech support, supposedly 24 hours. This was around 9:30 pm ET. A guy answered, an actual person, on the second ring. That is very good. He said I just needed a converter cable, and I find that Newegg has just what I needed (DVI Male to VGA Female). So I ordered that and the extra gig of RAM.

It really is very nice that I don't have to chuck two 512s and can just add 1 gig. That has stopped me from getting other machines.

So far it looks good. I haven't installed anything on it yet, and I HATE the Norton stuff on it, but it looks fine. The manual (no physical manual) looks crappy. Weird font.

Norton is just brilliant (not). I turn it on the pc for the first time, it spends a while configuring Vista, and Norton decides that it's time to go online to update itself. I haven't even set up the network yet. Once I have the network setup, Norton can update, and after doing some stuff it tells me to reboot. Ok. Then another part of Norton complains that I'm trying to reboot in the middle of an update. What morons. I have to reboot twice before Norton is happy. After the three month freebie is over, Norton bites the dust.

I just read that someone is likely to buy Symantec. What a waste of time and money.

The keyboard seems fine. The arrow keys are sort of small, and Enter is small, but I think it's ok. I mostly use the numeric keypad for the arrows anyway and if I keep my right pinky fingernail trimmed I won't hit the \ by accident when I go for Enter. When that happens I know it's time to reach for the trimmer.

Good news on the second drive, since 100gigs isn't what it once was. This thing certainly is big enough to have room for 2.

The drive is already divided into three logical drives. One is weird, about a 5gb partition without a drive letter<?>. I would guess a restore partition but it comes with a restore disk. Then there is a boot partition of around 45 gigs and a second partition of 45 gigs. I have a spare 60gb that I bought for my current laptop so I could play with Vista, so I'll just wipe that and stick it in.

Hmm, about that keyboard. It is weird, I posted in the Notebook forum about it. The enter key is too far to the right and the left shift is too far to the left. I think I'll keep it though. I'll try it for a few days.

I just got back from a PC Fair and there was no case big enough for it.

The OfficeMax folks said 14 day refund policy. Their receipt is contradictory. It says "If you aren't satisfied with your purchase, simply return it in the complete packaging... within 30 days ... we will gladly replace, repair or refund your money. Computers ... must be returned within 14 days."

Ok, so that means that just being unsatisfied is enough. In a later paragraph it says that "opened computers will not be accepted unless defective."

I'd be willing to bet that they would take back the computer if I wanted, or I could sue them in small claims court and win based on that receipt. After all, how can you tell if you are satisfied without opening the box and using the computer?

Moot point I think. I like it. I'm waiting for my gig of ram and dvi->vga adapter from Newegg. I'll try Compusa tomorrow for a knapsack that will hold this monster.

I picked one up don't know if i'm going to keep it yet.

That keyboard is really weird, no? I have already gotten pretty used to the return key, but I keep getting \ instead of a capital letter due to the shift. That will take a bit of time.
