Need help spending $$!

Running windows SMP folding...

what would be the performance hits going from an E4300 to an AMD X2 3600+?

I'm debating on what to get for my sister. Time to replace the 3.2c. I've been planning on an E4300 around april 22nd, but I've been thinking that maybe a X2 3600+ is a better choice as its 1/2 the cost..

As far as overclocking goes, unless you know of a good overclocking board under $100 for an E4300, than it most likely will run around stock clocks with a ASRock 775Dual-VSTA.

It will have 2 gigs of ram....for the price I paid for one on my rig...

So in your eyes, give the plus and minus and performance specs (ppd estimattion) of both possible rigs.

Thanks.

What OS is she going to run ?

Vista? XP? Linux?

The price would be best for her by going the X2 way.

How often is it going to Fold?
What apps is she going to run?

Price = AMD
Folding=Intel AMD yeah, AMD.

Sounds like a Vista machine (2gigs).

What percentage are you going to run Folding on it?
(to allow her easy access to her apps) 70-80%

I *cough* think she'd be better off going the X2 for the price.

Really. price=X2

ok, ok, so I can't read Shell.

Price go AMD.
Folding, go Intel.

How much does she actually use it?

Go 4300 & reduce the % it Folds.

That way she can actually use it.

Go by what the price is Today, and figure off that.

By the time you do buy the stuff, if is cheaper, all the better.

Warrior I made it a little easier for ya She'll be running windows. I'd love to get her on linux/Ubuntu but I'm not sure if that will happen.

She will be running vista unless I can come up with a free legal copy of XP. I'd prefer her on XP but since I got a free copy of Vista...(back when Microsoft did that connect to business thing.)

I'll using SMP folding, for sure. I'll leave FAH set to 100% when idle, but I think she'll only be folding 5-8 hours a day at most. Not entirely sure as now she doesn't do much on her computer as her dieing mobo gives her a blue screen often when she does anything with sound...

when you say to reduce the % it folds, why so? I have two standard client in windows, I run them even when I play Oblivion. In linux I've never had an issue running the Linux SMP at 100%, and I often play tux racer.

Must be more powerful than my wifes pc.

I can't have hers @ 100% or it takes forever to do anything.

YMMV though.

Get what is gonna cheapest cost wise.

Intel will Fold better
AMD might just have "the right price" you want though.

Honest.

Would I steer you wrong?

Buddy.

Lol, well is your wifes rig, running 470*7=3290?

Ok, well thanks for the advice. I think I am going to go with an E4300..

But if I were to go the AMD route, what motherboard would you or anyone recommend? I've never build an AMD system, only inherited older systems. NForce 5 chipset? Is there an Nforce 6 yet for AMD?

one other thing. Do you think an Antec True Power 400watt, (18 amps on the 12volt rail) will be enough for a system with an X1650 Pro?

As far as mobos go, browse the Egg & see what they have that might fit the bill.

Asus makes some good boards. Cheapy X2.
Even for Intel, they have some fair boards.

More OC'n, the price goes up.

You'll be happy with a 4300 for her I'm sure.
Unless you pay an arm & leg for it.

400 W PS, Dual Core CPU & a 1650 pro?

Just leave the CD burner out & it'll be fine.

I'd say 450 at least. 400 is tight.

EDIT: if you do go AMD, get a mobo that has / uses Dual channel memory!
