Help making a decision~

So my current system is:

- Nvidia 7600gt
- 1 gb corsair value
- 160 gb hitachi sata 3.0
- Amd 3500+
- Asus a8n-e motherboard

And Im devating on either upgrading it or buying a whole new system~

The whole reason foy wanting to get a new system is that i don't know how inferior my current AMD 3500+ is to the curent DualCore monsters. If any of u had this system and 1100$ to spend, what would u do? Keeping in mind u r going for performance. What i mean with performance u ask?

Well, im trying to get a system that won't lag nor crash if i run my azureus, 2 msn's, winamp, mirc, yahoo msn, gtalk, some ftp client and decide to start encoding some video (h264) on meGUI << or at least a system that would lag the less than my current one (althought i keep blaming my ram O__o!)

Would selling the current system to add to the budget be an option?
If so a very solid Conroe rig is within your budget.

I have about the same system as what you have now except cpu is opty 165 and ram is 3gb and mine runs smooth as glass while encoding video.

Same system as my main rig, only 2x 7950's on the SLI version of my board and 2x 150 Gb Raptors in raid 0 for the main drive.

So, u suggest adding RAM? If so, what kind of ram would be my best choice? (some newegg links would help xD)

@greenmaji

It's not completely out of the question, the thing is~ i've never done it, for starters i wouldn't even know how to or where to sell it nor how much it is actually worth (my system that is).

I have 2x512mb corsair 3200xl and I added 2x1gb of supertalent. supertalent is better than corsair value ram but not the best. I got supertalent 2gb kit w/ heatspreader for $159 at ewiz and was cheaper than newegg also you could upgrade to dual core cpu and total cost would be around $300 for ram and cpu.

Memory won't help with the lag only with stalls from swap files.

The multitasking crashes are caused by modren computers. I have been testing this for 7 years they just are not able handel the task well.

They say the Conroe is solid, i will find out when i test it in june.

The pc that is the base of the solid testing is a p3 1.4, 7800 GT CO SuperClocked, XP sp2

Im running a game and server, a net movie also here on the form it's smooth as glass. if the programs will run, it won't crash on a p3

I've always been a multitasker, the best was the p3 that's where it ended two
now im just a multitask tester with the new systems lol.

I don't think windows would use the swapfile if it had enough ram. the question is how much can XP use.

you can get the 3800+ X2 for $90 and super talent ddr400 2gb kit $130

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820609058
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103052

I think that will hold you over for awhile and you will be happy with the encoding speed. The opteron 165 might overclock a little better it's around $60 more but you get 2x1mb cache and mine will do above 2.6 ghz without any vcore tweaks

Ok i ordered the ram already~ but im holding my horses on the processor since i'd like to know if that's the best i can/should get (if im upgrading~ i might as well put some money into it=p)

Is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Toledo 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - OEM better or more suitable for my system than other Dual Core? (Im completely clueless so im not even sure that if i get a Dual core processor my mainboard will run with it)~

The best CPU for your rig is the one that has the multipler to do the job
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=391768
It would be wise to use that guide and figure out what the max HTT is of your motherboard and select a processor accordingly

and btw.. http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...3&l2=15&l3=171
your motherbord is fine for dual core support

Whats the problem? I had bought some corsair value select for a computer I was building for someone else and after a week it went bad and there has been alot of complaints about those modules I sort of blew it because hey it corsair so it's got to be good another thing thats almost comical I used a antec sonata 2 case for a build and I ran it for a few days and they came and picked up when they got home it wouldn't start psu tested bad that was eithier one heck of a ride or one of the worst built psu's in history.

If you click on the applications tab wouldn't you see which programs are utilising so much CPU power?

I'd suggest checking the applications tab with the 2Gb RAM and without.
A screenshot would help.

The amount of ram shouldn't have anything to do with processor usage. The facts are the a8n-e board drops ram speed down to ddr200 and lowers timings if all four slots are used. what you need to do is go into bios and manually set timings to 3-8-3-3-11-14-5-3-2 and ddr400 or if you are overclocking fsb ddr 333 or less

I don't even know how to overclock~ but if u say that the a8n-e drops ram speed when all 4 slots are used (which is the current case)~ would u mind giving me easy to follow or step-by-step instructions to set the timing right (taking in account that i've never attempted going into the bios).
