AMD is going to screw up the R600 release

Can any one tell me why would AMD is having launch event of the next generation graphic card in Africa of all the places since the US is going to be its biggest market????? And why did AMD makes the media fill out none-disclosure agreement so they can't write up review for few weeks? This R600 has been a hush hush ever since it was announced. You would think AMD wants to get the word out asap since they are bleeding red ink and INTEL is kicking it's butt and Nvidia has the 8800 card for a few months now. I hope ATI doesn't become 3DFX!

Actually, China will likely be the biggest market, followed by the U.S.

So nVidia won't know what they're up against until it's actually out.
It's going to be a huge release, with all 3 lines coming out within the same Quarter.
The r600 is going to be cheaper and more powerful then the 8800... and nVidia will only be able to deal with one of the two when it comes out.

There's a lot of fabs rolling out the cores and switiching to the 65nm process.

But if I was AMD, I would not be going after China market. US is where the money is.

Don't underestimate Asia and Europe for per-capita hardware/gaming enthusiasts. The US is big but we have a lot of Joe Sixpacks who buy computers the same way they go pick up a toaster.

^^^ exactly.

either way AMD is playing it smart, dont let NVIDIA / Intel know what is coming, this way NVIDIA cant start their ramp up's and increase core speeds and blow ATI's launch day with a recycled 8800.

Na thats what the Ultra is for and doesn't look to be horribly faster than the GTX of course.

AMD has already messed up release. They have cards ready and are waiting to ship it out. NDA sucks but thats both what ATI and AMD have done in the past til just before release. Of course someone will spill some info so its a matter of time.

As well why they chose Africa as because its somewhere totally different from what most people typically see. As well not many have been there so it was a perfect place to hold this as how they put it. I could care less where they hold it but interesting that they selected Africa.

Wows… remember that the 8800 series is now coming up on being released for 6 months now. I hope the “r600” based cards are faster, at least they better be (for ATi's sake)

I know NV has to have something waiting. Although with the market share I’m sure they have gobbled up due to Ati failure to release ANYTHING….

Whatever – I don’t wanna come off as a fanboy – whatever the most powerful card is in June (the next time I’ll have extra coin) im moving from the 8800gts to that. ATi or NV…

They're "going" to screw up the release? They ALREADY screwed up the release!

Damned thing was supposed to be out months ago and there's still no firm release date yet. All I hear is how much "faster" it's supposed to be. Well it can be eight times as fast and it won't make a lick of difference if everybody's (or enough people) already bought NVIDIA products by then.

(I personally am eyeing the Gigabyte cards that come with Supreme Commander.)

Edit: I was going to buy Supreme Commander anyway, but for an extra hundred bucks I can get a graphics card with it that will at LEAST be faster than my 7600GS.

My guess as to why they are launching the R600 in Tunisia is due to well one simple reason. The CEO took a huge map of the wall, blindfolded himself and wherever the dart hit they would hit it. If it his the butt of his cat, "Mr. Snuggle bottoms" then they would host the launch near the butt of his cat. (Man that was such a horrid joke.)

No one really knows why they chose Tunisia. But eh, the day of the launch it will be Christmas for all.

It's going to be an uphill battle for sure, Overall Nvidia seems to have their act together right now, While Ati is stuggling to get their product in the marketplace. Going 6 month's or more with no answer to the competitions most recent product line is simply not going to get it done.

I know nvidia have a 6 month lead but tbh the x1950xtx still holds it own against the 8800gtx and who needs dx10 yet?

Ati will deliver a tremendous card, i am sure of that. And if it holds up as well as the last generation then im sure they will be fine. Not to forget Ati will have still been hard at work in R&D with there own successor to the R600 + the extreme gfx cards such as the 8800 series only make for a small percentage of the total market share and the x1900 series are still selling very well at their rock bottom prices so nvidia wont have nesecarily taken a large portion of the sales. I know even when the gtx and gts cards came out i still bought a dx9 card albeit a NV 7900gs as i wanted to wait for price drops and competition and i wont be the only 1.

The battle is won but the war aint over by a long shot,or at least imo.

Frankly did ATI need a DX10 card 6 months ago? Not like NVIDIA did a good job on it (for vista users)

perhaps ATI did think smart "do we NEED to release card right now? ", decided no, lets work on it more and make it better (hopfullyyyyyyy)

North America is the largest market with Europe second.

Are you kidding. NV has known exactly what they are up against for a long time. It worked the other
way around when ATI was leading NV in the "old" days too.

Come release 2900XT release time the 8800GTX will be about the same price. The 2900XT and the
8800GTX are pretty closely matched in stock trim. NV isn't worried about the XTX either. It's delayed
until at least mid July and NV has been fabbing the competitive silicon for weeks now.

The only FAB making the 65nm XTX cores is TSMC and the first spin on the die shrink was a disaster
(hench the XTX delay) but that is not unusual on a first go round either. It would have been a miracle to
nail it on the first try.

Not to mention the acquisition of the company by AMD would have an impact on development no matter what they "claim". I don't think 6 bad months is going to put a company under.
