Not impressed at the moment.

Hey, just finsihed my new Build, System in sig.

Installed XP which went ok but now everytime i boot my system up, when it gets to the Windows Logo it takes like 20secs to actully get on my desktop, now surely this cant be right?

Having a hole load of problems, just downloaded Windows Live Messanger and when it tried to install it came up with a message, "Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted cabinet file.

The computer crashes every so often.

have you installed anything on this fresh install?

when i have a totally fresh install, i only get like 2 bar swipes on the xp loading screen. when my hd is loaded up to the gills, like it is now, then it can take much longer.

i would make sure you have a current bios.

what setting do you have in bios, and what are your pc's specs actually? (your sig doesn't really say).

also, did you install at stock speeds or overclocked?

load times really depend on hardware and if the install is optimized.... use tunexp 1.5 and run the faster startup option... it should start significantly faster.

Sorry should of said.

Core 2 Duo E6420
Crucial Ballistic 5300 C3 2GB
ASUS P5B Deluxe

Running at stock speeds, havent overclocked, latest BIOS, Drivers and a Fresh Install.

When i change something in the BIOS and then save it and exit the computer shuts of for like 2secs then comes back on again?

Its not just the load times, its when im on the desktop to, it jogs a bit, even when opening a folder like Program files. Just isnt right.

that quick shutdown then start up again is an inherent problem of the p5b dlx (mine does that too)
out of just personal speculation, i think when you significantly alter the voltages, it does that.

but long story short. nothing to worry about.

i would manually set the ram to 1:1 in the bios. to do this, set the ai tuning to manual, and change the ddr2 speed from auto to the first option, should be 533mhz. this will rule out the memory.

the start->reboot->start is "normal" on 965 boards, although it doesn't happen to me at all clocks. some fsb just don't seem to do it.

Ok cool, least that isnt to much of a prob.

What about my performance in windows, it really isn't up to much. It is pretty slow for this type of CPU?

i don't know what you mean by slow. like, windows are taking forever to load and such? it takes a long time to open 'my computer'?

have you installed all of the drivers for the motherboard? drivers for all of your peripherals? drivers for your videocard, windows updates, etc?

have you run any benchmarks? what was your old system, and did you ever run any benchmarks on it?

I have the same board as you... it takes forever to load windows xp... Actually my current PC even with a quad core loads windows slower than my AMD64 socket 754 system... It's just the way the motherboard is i guess....

I guess i can live with the boot problem but its in windows too, When i click on my computer, my documents etc, just takes a while to load 3-4 seconds.

Surely thats not right?

Just so you know there is a faster SATA function you can use, I think it's called AHCI or something like that... it made a huge difference in boot times and made windows feel faster, but it was unstable for me so I had to go to normal SATA again.. It still bothers me that my sisters "slow" AMD 64 pc has faster hard drive response than my "Quad Core monster"

I assume you have gone into msconfig, startup tab and shut off all the un-needed startup items, then moved to the services tab, hid microsoft services and then remove all un-necessary services. This can cause a nice change in boot time and system responsiveness.

When i go into BIOS the Hard Drives seem to be set as IDE, for some strange reason, they are SATA. Yes thier is a option called AHCI.
