I have a bunch of stuff that I'd like to keep archived. I've been using DVDs but I need more storage and was thinking of just keeping stuff on hard drives and storing them somewhere. So, how long will a hard drive actually keep data if it's just stored in a closet somewhere? Longer than a DVD?
I wouldn't need to access it very often, and could just put it in a USB box when that needs to be done. Of course, formats change so PATA would be out as of now.
So, do hard drives fail if they're not even in use?
