Screen resolution win 98se and XP pro

Ok, I got an older system (see my signature) with removable drive drive bays, pull out type. I have win 98se on one drive and xp pro on the other. I bought a new 20inch ViewSonic HD lcd monitor and cannot get the resolution on win 98se recommended, 1680x1050 by ViewSonic. XP np problems. Is this a limit by win 98? The choice is 1600x1200 highest allowed. I kinda figured it is because the same hardware under XP is fine. I am just curious...
By the way I am in the process of building a new system I just couldn't wait to plug in my LCD and break away from the CRT flat screen I had.
