Stanford set me a pink slip

Freakin Folding! Mobo is dead again.............

So first time my motherboard dies in the middle of the 2 for 1 contest with ZIM. I was doing pretty good, I might have beat Mr. Tomato, as I was averaging slightly more ppd.

But it happens sometimes. So got back from school trip to Italy yesterday, test everything out with my fresh from RMA mobo, it all looks good. I hook it all up through it in a case and wait to try it till this morning. So this morning I get up and turn the puppy on, all it good, bios boot. So I go into the bios to disable onboard audio and adjust all the settings, dates, (leaving it at stock clocks). I boot up into Debian. FAH starts up automatically, and I run a software update. Then all of a sudden I smell this eletrical fire smell. I quickly try to turn everything off. To late computer frooze, then it restarts by itself fater than I can get to the power cord.

I didn't see any smoke but my PSU is definetly fried. It smells bad. (Can I get an RMA on that?). I swapped in a older PSU I have here, and the motherboard just restarts itself 2-3 times and then nothing. No video, no sound, no beeping. The motherboard doesn't post. So this is great. A PSU and a freakin Motherboard are dead this time........I better be able to RMA them both, as I did nothing freakin wrong...except run FAH.

Ahh! Rotten luck. >:[

You should definitely be able to RMA both the board and the PSU.

Glad to see you back Shell, hope your trip was good.

Sorry to hear about the hardware misfortunes.

Was it a C2D rig?

Yeah its my main rig. (also my only folding rig).

My trip was incredible. As soon as newegg opens up a Europe website, there will be nothing to stop me from moving to italy. Its so nice there.

I am really starting to wonder about asus'es ability to actually fix anything with an rma.

They are great mobo's if they work, but their rma's sound like worse odds than a crap shoot. I have 1 failed asus rma out of 1 attempt so far.

I would find it very hard to believe that the psu failure was coincidental ... more likely that the fix from the rma failed and fried the psu?

I do have 2 p5b-d's so i hope they stay stable.

One lesson I've learned through numerous builds and more than a few failures is always assemble the rig on your bench and run it a few days before you put it in the case. It'll save you a lot of time and get it folding quicker.

Sad fortune on that rig Shel. I had one die on me last week too. I just need to get the time to get it sent off for RMA. Mine also had a PSU involved, but it was the PSU that took the mobo. The board was great until the PSU died in the middle of the night. I woke up to find some burnt traces on the back of the board. I have heard quite a few horror stories of Asus RMA, but the Asus boards that I have are working flawlessly. But at the same time, I have also had nothing but good luck with Biostar boards. Anyway, I hope you get everything worked out. It really doesn't feel too good to have a rig die on you like that.
